任务型阅读

At the moment, it may be difficult to imagine, but many people believe that, by the year 2100, we will live on the planet Mars. Our own planet, Earth, is becoming more and more crowded and polluted. Luckily, we can start again and build a better world on Mars.

First of all, transport should be much better. At present, our spaceships are too slow to carry large numbers of people to Mars—it takes months. However, by 2100, spaceship can travel at half the speed of light. It might take us two or three days to get to Mars!

Secondly, humans need food, water and air to live. Scientists should be able to develop plants that can be grown on Mars. These plants will produce the food and air that we need. However, can these plants produce water for us? There is no answer now.

There is a problem for us to live on Mars. Mars suck us much less than the Earth does. This will be dangerous because we could easily jump too high and fly slowly away into space. To prevent this, humans on Mars have to wear special shoes to make themselves heavier.

Life on Mars will be better than that on Earth in many ways. People will have more space. Living in a large building with only 10 bedrooms is highly possible. Many people believe that robots will do most of our work, so we have more time for our hobbies.

There will probably be no school on Mars. Every student will have a computer at home which is connected to the Internet. They can study, do their homework and take exams in online schools. Each student will also have his own online teacher called “e-teacher”.

However, in some ways, life on Mars may not be better than that on the Earth today. Food will not be the same—meals will probably be in the form of pills and will not be as delicious as they are today. Also, space travel will make many people feel ill. The spaceship will travel fast, so the journey to Mars will probably be very uncomfortable.

A group of scientists discovered a gas called phosphine(磷化氢) on Venus(金星). That means there may be living things on the planet, which made many people start to imagine the talk between aliens and humans. A reporter from Washington Post wrote a letter to people of Earth on behalf of(代表) the citizens on Venus.

Attention, People of Earth ,

Fine. The big secret is out. Many of your finest scientists have discovered there is life tens of millions of miles away-here, on the beautiful planet of Venus. Congratulations! However, we have a polite request: Please stay away.

We’re serious. No spacecrafts to Venus, no tasks, no visits. If we wake up one morning and see so many of you people wandering around in spacesuits, we’re going to be really upset.

We don’t want to be impolite. It’s just that we’re shocked by what you’ve got going on down there.
Earth looks like a mess. You’ve got health problems, environmental pollution, traffic jams, political fights, etc. No wonder so many of you want to leave Earth for another planet.

We know you’d like it here. That’s what frightens us. you’d all move to Venus at once. If we start having you all up here, pretty soon, the Martians(火星人)and Jupiterians(木星人) are going to come, too. But we can’t handle so much.

Venus is not Earth 2. We suggest that you solve your problem because the earth is your only home.

God bless you!

Sincerely,

Venusians(金星人)

Say hello to Changesite-(Y)— the sixth new lunar mineral(月球矿物)!

Chinese scientists found it in moon samples(样品)brought back by the Chang’e 5 lunar probe in December 2020. It has become the first lunar mineral found by Chinese scientists, making China the third nation in the world, after the United States and Russia, to have achieved such a success, reported China Daily.

Changesite-(Y)looks crystal(晶莹的)clear like a diamond. But its chemical content is different from any other known mineral.(A)It has a high level of rare earth(稀土), reported China Science Daily. Li Ziying, chief scientist of the lunar sample research, said that the finding of this new mineral will help researchers study the history and physical traits(特征)of the moon. The value of the rare earth in(B)it will also be studied.

(C)Besides the new mineral, scientists also measured the content(含量)of helium-3(氦-3from the Chang’e 5 samples. Helium-3 is a valuable fuel(燃料)that can provide safer nuclear energy(核能). It is not radioactive(放射性的)and would not produce dangerous waste. On Earth, we have only 15 to 20 tons of helium-3 that can be used. But after studying the moon’s soil, scientists said there could be at least 1 million tons of helium-3 on the moon. That’s enough for all people on Earth to have clean energy for 10,000 years!
