New York City isn’t the biggest city in the world, but it is the biggest city in the United States. Most Americans live in much smaller cities and towns, but almost 8 million people live in New York City. Why do so many people come to live in New York City?

New York City has a very good port (港口). The Dutch settlers (new comers) wanted to do business at the port. In 1626, the Dutch paid the Indians twenty-four dollars for the island of Manhattan. Its Dutch name was New Amsterdam. Then the British took the land in 1664 and changed its name to New York.

The United States became an independent country in 1783, and New York was its capital for a short time. The city became famous and a good place for business. People from all over the world are pouring into the city.

The government of Luxembourg says that it will make all public transportation(公共交通) free beginning in 2021. The plan helps cut down(减少) on traffic and pollution(污染).

Luxembourg is a small country between Belgium, France, and Germany. It is one of the smallest countries in the world— less than 1,000 square miles (2,586 square kilometers) in area. In spite of its small size, the country plays an important part in Europe. It’s one of three capitals of the European Union and it’s home to the European Court of Justice—the highest court in Europe.

But Luxembourg has a traffic problem. During rush hours— the times that most cars are on the road as people drive to or from work— there are lots of traffic jams. Some trips that should take 30 minutes can take an hour or longer.

One reason for the traffic jams is that Luxembourg has more cars one person than most other European countries. There are 662 cars for every 1,000 people. The average in the European Union is 468 cars for 1,000 people.

It’s not just the people of Luxembourg causing the problem. Luxembourg only has about 600,000 people in all— fewer than most large cities. But so many workers come into Luxembourg from the countries around it. Close to 200,000 people travel to and from the country every day for work.
