Rob Frenette had problems with bullies (欺辱) at school for eleven years. He was often lonely and scared. When he was fifteen, however, he decided to do something about his problems. He walked into a newspaper office and told them about the bullying. His story went into the newspaper and soon all the TV stations in Canada wanted to talk to him about his experiences. They also wanted to hear his ideas to stop bullying.

After that, Rob continued his studies at school, but in his free time he helped other people with bullying problems. With a friend Katie Neu, he made a website called www. bullyingcanada. ca. Visitors to the website can find advice, stories and poems about bullying, in both English and French. When people are upset, they can talk on the phone or online to Rob and his team. Every weekend Rob has to answer e-mails to the website. He also speaks to children, teachers and members of government around the country about bullying.

Rob’s most important message is: “When bullies are unkind to you, it isn’t your fault. There’s nothing wrong with you, so you should try to keep trusting yourself. And remember that people care about your problems. You just have to find those people.”

One of Rob’s ideas is “Blue Day”, a special day for stopping bullying in schools. Students have to wear blue clothes and in class they learn how to stop bullying. More than 150 Canadian schools now celebrate Blue Day, but Rob won’t stop until there’s a Blue Day in every school in Canada.

Dear Sigmund Friend,

My brother plays the guitar very well, so my parents signed me up (报名) for guitar too. But I’m just not a guitar girl. What should I do?

Can’t Hold

Dear Can’t Hold,

Thank you for your letter. While your parents want you to play the guitar, mine hoped I’d play baseball. You would be amazed at how much my parents love baseball. My dad was the star player on his school team, and they first met in line to buy hot dogs at a baseball game!

Years ago, my parents thought baseball would just be in my blood and I’d be a talented player. Before I could say “Thanks, but no thanks”, they had signed me up and ordered my uniform!

Don’t get me wrong. My training on baseball wasn’t terrible. Our coach was nice and the kids on our team were great. Even though I never became very good at baseball, I did improve by the end of that season. Then something unexpected happened one day. My grandmother took me to the community pool on the way home after the baseball practice. It turned out to be the best time I ever had. I swam happily with a boy called Ben and later we became good friends. Then we decided to join a swimming team.

So I talked to my parents about it that night, and they were surprisingly understanding about wanting to be on a swimming team. But they said I should finish out that year’s baseball first.

So dear Can’t Hold, here’s what I think. Your parents possibly think that because your brother is into guitar, you must be into it too. But they won’t know how you feel if you don’t talk them about it. Why not let them know that guitar doesn’t seem like the right instrument for you, give another instrument a try? Maybe you can give violin or piano a shot.

Hope my advice is helpful.

Mary and Michael have faced some problems recently and asked Anna for help.

Dear Anna,

I’m really worried about my daughter. I think some of the older boys in her school are bullying her. Every day she comes home from school in tears. And every morning she says she doesn’t feel well because she doesn’t want to go to school. Can you give me some advice?

Mary

Hi Mary,

I think you should go and talk to your daughter’s head teacher. Bullying is a serious problem in many schools, and every school must have a rule to stop it. Perhaps you could also have a talk with your daughter, and give her some good advice.

Anna

Dear Anna,

My neighbors keep playing loud music late at night. I’ve been there a couple of times to complain (抱怨), and they turn it down for a few minutes. But ten minutes later, they turn it up again. It’s making me very stressed. What do you think I should do?

Michael

Hi Michael,

I think you should speak to them one more time. Perhaps you could go during the day, when it’s quiet and you feel calm (冷静). Try to be polite and explain how their music is making you feel. Tell them that you would really like to be friendly to them, but if they keep making noise at night, you will call the police. Before you do this, you should write down all the dates and time when your neighbors make too much noise.

Anna

It is said that more than four million people die each year from smoking. That number is increasing. Seven in ten of those deaths are in developing countries. These numbers are frightening(令人恐惧的).

Yet people around the world continue to smoke. The Great American Smokeout has been founded for twenty-five years to show the dangers of smoking and provide support for people who decide to stop smoking. The American Cancer Society says all cigarettes damage the body. It warns that smoking even a small number of cigarettes is dangerous. It is not easy to give up smoking forever. However, doctors say they probably will live longer if they do stop smoking. They will feel better and look better. They also will protect the health of family members who breathe their smoke.

The American Cancer Society says there is not just one right way to stop smoking. Any useful way to stop smoking is worth tying. They may take long walks or spend time in places where smoking is not allowed. Also, they could eat a small piece of fruit instead of having a cigarette.

The American Cancer Society says the sooner smokers stop smoking, the more they can reduce their risks of getting cancer and other diseases. It says blood pressure(血压)returns to normal twenty minutes after smoking the last cigarette. Carbon monoxide(一氧化碳)gas levels in the blood return to normal after eight hours. After one day, the risk of heart attack reduces. After one year, the risk of heart disease for a non-smoker is half that of a smoker.

Stop smoking before smoking stops you!
