On the first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. "Hi, girl! My name is Rose, and I'm 87 years old."

"Why are you in college at such a young age?" I asked jokingly.

"I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!" she replied.

Rose became a college symbol this year and she easily made friends with other students.

At the end of the semester, we invited Rose to speak at our football party. I'll never forget what she taught us.

"We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only two secrets of staying young, being happy and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humour every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die!" she said.

"There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do anything, you will turn 20 years older. If I am 87 years old, and stay in bed for a year, and never do anything, I will turn 88. Anybody can grow older. But every minute counts for young men," she added.

She ended her speech by singing The Song of Rose. She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives.

At the year's end,Rose finished the college education she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep.

My grandfather had a small farm. He also worked in a factory.

One autumn, he promised to help his neighbor harvest their corn, but after harvesting (收割) his own corn, Grandpa’s little corn picker (采摘机) broke. At the same time, the factory asked him to work for a longer time than before. He had to leave the farm before the sunrise (日出) and didn’t get home until the sunset (日落). It now seemed impossible to help his neighbor.

One night, Grandpa decided that he wouldn’t let his neighbor’s harvest rot (腐烂) in the field. Without a machine, he’d harvest it by hand.

“When do you think you’d have time to do it?” asked my grandma. “Besides, it’s too dark.”

“I know of one night that I could do it!” he said. “There’s still one more full moon in October. If the weather is clear, I think I can do it. ”

And so a few days later, after a long shift (轮班) at the factory, my grandpa made his way to the field. The weather was cold but clear, and the moon was shining. He worked all night to keep his word. Sometimes, when I want to put off responsibilities (责任), I’d see my grandfather cutting corn in the light of the harvest moon. Behind him, row (行、排) after row of corn stocks (秸秆) stand in respect (尊重) for a man who keeps his word.

One day, a physically-deformed man came to our college and on his back was a notice saying, “Free shoe repairing for college students”.
Repairing shoes for free? Most of us didn’t believe it, and some even thought that it was just a device(策略) to the students who would have to pay for shoes once they had been repaired. But the man just smiled and said, “Save your money to buy some books.” These words really surprised me and I talked with him, “You need to make a living. Why do you repair shoes for us for free?” He answered, while keeping on working, “I’m an illiterate(文盲), but I know how important knowledge is for everyone. So I’d like to serve the students like you. I hope you can do well in your studies. In my opinion, money isn’t everything in life.”
After the chat, I felt he was great compared with me. He, a physically-deformed man who couldn’t walk without a wheelchair, still tried his best to devote(奉献) himself to society. I would like to thank him because he gave me a new direction in my life, and taught me what the true value of life is.

Once a king got two nice falcons (猎鹰) from his son. He had never seen such beautiful falcons before. He loved them so much and he ordered the best falconer (训鹰人) to train them to fly.

After several months, the king came to see how the training was going on. He found that one falcon had already been able to fly high in the sky, while the other was staying on the branch (树枝) of a tree quietly, just keeping still.

The king called all his falconers together and ordered them to try every way they could to make the other falcon fly. But none of them succeeded. One day, while the king was taking a walk in the forest, an idea came to his mind. Maybe someone who knew the natural environment well could solve this problem. He sent for a farmer who lived in the forest into his palace to train it at once.

The next morning, the king saw the other falcon flying above in the sky freely. “It is unbelievable!” shouted the king.“ How could you make it happen?”

The farmer replied, “It’s very easy. I just cut off the branch where the falcon rested.”

It is always the same to human beings. We all have “two flying wings” in our hearts as well, but we often seem not to notice them and stay where we are just for safety and comfort. We won’t realize we can fly so high and freely until the “branch” we are resting on breaks.

D.Because he wanted to know more about his falcons.
【小题3】Which question could best help us find out the writer’s purpose?
A.Did the writer want us to keep falcons?
B.Did the writer want us to train falcons?
C.Did the writer want us to stay in a comfort area?
D.Did the writer want us to move out of the comfort area?
