Trees are useful to man in important ways: they provide him with wood and other products;they provide him shade;and they help to prevent droughts(旱灾)and floods.

Unfortunately,in many parts of the world, man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important. In his eagerness to make money from trees,(1)______________,only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had.

This does not only mean that man will have fewer trees. The results are even more serious: for where there are trees, their roots break up soil allowing the rain to sink in and also bind(固定)the soil, thus preventing it from being washed away easily;but where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and flows away, causing floods and carrying away the rich top-soil. When the top-soil is gone, nothing remains but worthless desert.

Two thousand years ago,a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships, with which to gain itself and empire. It set up the empire, but without its trees,(2)_______________. When the empire fell to pieces, the home country found itself faced by floods and starvation(饥荒).

Even though a government realizes the importance of a plentiful supply of trees,it is difficult for it to persuade(说服)the villager to see this. The villager wants wood to cook his food, and he can earn money by making charcoal or selling wood to the townsman. He is usually too lazy or too careless to plant and look after trees. So unless the government has a good system of control,or can educate the people, the forests will slowly disappear.

Have you ever heard of e-waste? How do you deal with your computers, MP4 players and mobile phones when they’re broken or you want a new one?

Most people just throw them away. With the development of electric industry, e-waste pollution has become a serious problem. According to the United Nations, in 2014, people around the world produced 41.8 million tons of e-waste and only recycled 6.5 million tons. The US was the biggest waster, producing 7.1 million tons. China came second, with 6 million tons.

It’s important to pay attention to e-waste. It can either be valuable for harmful, depending on how we deal with it. E-waste is a valuable urban mine(城市矿山). The value of the metals, like gold and silver in the waste around the world, is amazing. And we can reuse the metals. But if people throw them away, the toxic chemicals can be too bad for people’s health.

Apple, for example, now recycles people’s used products in China when they are buying new ones. The company will test and repair the used ones and sell them at lower prices.

In a word, we should deal with e-waste properly to reduce pollution.

What did you do for the earth on the World Environment Day which falls on June 5th this year? Did you try to help protect the environment?

Su Yige, a vlogger (视频博主) on Bilibili, does so in her daily life. Su always takes her own bag when she goes shopping. She always gets what she wants from second-hand stores. And when she accidentally gets her clothes dirty, she takes out a handkerchief (手帕) from her handbag to wipe it off.

Su says her idea of avoiding waste partly comes from her thrifty (节俭的) family. Like her parents, Su hates to see people waste. She used to believe Westerners knew better about environmental protection. She was then shocked when she saw mountains of food waste being left outside of supermarkets in Canada seven years ago. She was a student at the time, but she decided to “step in” and started an environmental vlog on Bilibili. “In my videos, I share my love for old, recyclable things. And I also teach people to make natural washing powder,” Su said in an interview. Her videos have received up to 95,000 likes. Under her influence, many young people have reexamined their lifestyles. Ding Nan from Fujian, for example, has said goodbye to all bottled drinks and has been carrying a reusable plastic box with her wherever she goes.

Now, by exchanging tips with her fans and other environmental vloggers, Su has continued to avoid creating waste and has helped more people to be environmentally friendly. She wants people to know that a green life can be enjoyable, too, once one has been used to it.

Will you start to do something for the earth today—even though it is not World Environment Day?
