Recently, I overheard（偶尔听到）a mother and daughter in their last moments together at the airport as the daughter prepared to leave.

They hugged and the mother said, “I love you and I wish you enough.” They kissed and the daughter left.

The mother walked over to the window where I sat. Standing there, I could see she was going to cry. I tried not to disturb her but she welcomed me by asking, “Have you ever said goodbye to someone knowing it would be forever?”

“Yes,” I replied. “Forgive（原谅）me for asking but why is this the final goodbye?”

“I am ill and she lives so far away. The reality（现实）is the next trip back will be for my funeral（葬礼）” she said.

“When you were saying goodbye, I heard you say ‘I wish you enough’. May I ask what that means?”

“That’s a wish that has been handed down from past generations（一代人）. My parents used to say it to everyone.” She paused for a moment and looked up as if trying to remember it in detail and she smiled even more.

“When we say ‘I wish you enough’, we want the other person to have a life filled with just enough good things to be with them.” Then turning to me, she shared the following:

“I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude（态度） bright. I wish you enough rain to appreciate（感激） the sun more.”

David has two lively children. One is five years old and the other is seven years old. One day, David was teaching his seven-year-old son, Kelly how to use a lawnmower（割草机）. When he was teaching how to turn the lawnmower around, his wife Mona called him and asked him about something. David turned to answer Mona’s question, while the naughty Kelly pushed the lawnmower into the flower bed. At first, he just wanted to practice and learn how to turn the lawnmower around. But when he saw that his father had not come, he took full advantage of the mowing techniques he had just learned and tried in the flower bed.

Wherever the lawnmower went. the flowers and leaves were everywhere. The beautiful flower bed immediately became a mess. When David turned and saw what was in front of him, he was simply mad. You must know how much time and effort he had put into his flower bed. But it was destroyed by Kelly in just a few minutes. “Oh, Kelly! What are you doing?” He rushed to Kelly. Just as he was preparing to punish his son, his wife ran to him and said seriously, “David, don’t do this. You know, we are raising ________, not raising flowers.” Hearing his wife’s words and looking at his son who was scared, David felt really embarrassed（尴尬的）. He lowered his head to calm himself down. And then he held Kelly tightly in his arms.

In my early childhood, I was often surprised when I saw my father making a small amount of money with difficulty. Being a child, I was unable to understand him. When I was older, my father started doing a part-time job at home. He used to bring some work back and work till late night.

I can’t forget he played with me when I was 3—4 years old. He taught me how to read when I was at the age of 5. He took care of me all night when I was sick. Whenever I felt down, he would cheer me up. He also cared about my lessons and often helped me get ready for examinations. Later he sent me to New Delhi for the best education. Whenever I needed money, he never refused. He always managed money for my studies.

Two years ago, I got a job at a hospital in New Delhi. When I got my first salary (薪水) which was about ten times more than my pocket money, I spent it all on myself.

When I returned home one fine morning, I heard my father communicating(交流) with one neighbor. He was telling him my success in the job very proudly. He also told him that I had a higher salary than him at the end of his work. A dream, his son should become better than himself came true.

I was unable to move on my feet. Past 23 years flashed into my mind in a moment. I knew my father loved me very much. I could understand the decisions my father made in the past. His goal (目标) is making his child more successful than himself.

If today I am successful, this is because of my father.
