American schools are quite different from those in China. In America, at the beginning of the term, students must select (挑选) their subjects and teachers first.

Selecting is very important for your marks in America. So at the first term, don’t select too many subjects, or you’ll feel very nervous and tired. Then you have to ask for some teaching plans. There is some information about subjects, time arranging, marks and textbooks. At the same time, you must choose the teachers. Different teachers have different teaching methods. If the teacher is called “killer” by the last grade, many students will give up choosing him, because this kind of teacher will leave too much homework, too many exams and give too low grades. There is another thing after you select the subjects and teachers. How to buy textbooks makes each student feel hard. The textbooks in America are very expensive. Each one is about $30–50. In order to save money, many students buy some used textbooks, and some students usually borrow textbooks from the school library.

In class, discussing is very important. The teacher encourages you to ask questions or show your own opinions. They don’t usually ask you to sit well. Instead they allow you to sit or stand anywhere you like.

Every student spends lots of time studying and almost everyone would like their study to be more efficient (高效的). Here are two ways to help you manage your time better when studying.

Your study environment

Watching TV while studying is a bad idea and makes your study ineffective (无效的). So you’d better turn off the TV while you’re studying. Some students like listening to music while studying. Music is OK, but whether it helps or hurts depends on whether it can keep your mind at peace. Make sure that any music you listen to is actually helping you study, but not drawing your attention away. Good lighting and temperature are necessary, too. When it’s too hot or too cold, it will be harder for you to give all your attention to what you are working on.

Full attention for at least 40 minutes at a time

One of the most important things you can do to study efficiently is to give all the attention to your study for at least 40 minutes at a time. Don’t let anything else draw your attention away from the study during the period. Then have a rest and relax. Don’t study for too long a time because your brain gets tired and it needs a rest.

If you choose these ways, you will make an improvement in how you manage your time for study.

Stay as safe as possible during an earthquake. Be aware that some earthquakes are actually foreshocks (前震) and a larger earthquake might occur. Reduce your movements to a few steps to a nearby safe place.
If you are indoors, do “duck, cover and hold”. Duck or drop down to the floor, under something strong, such as a table or a desk, cover your head and face with your arms and hands and hold on to that table or desk so that it does not move away from             you as the ground shakes. Do this until the shaking stops and it is safe to move. Stay inside to avoid being injured by falling glass or building parts. If there isn’t a table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch(蜷缩)in             an inside comer of the building.
Stay clear of windows, fireplaces, and heavy furniture that may fall over. Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries occur when people inside buildings attempt to move to a different location             inside the building or try to leave.
If you are outside, get into the open and stay there. Move away from trees, buildings, signs and power lines. Once in the open, stay there until the shaking stops. The greatest danger exists directly outside buildings, at exits and alongside exterior             walls. Ground movement during an earthquake is seldom the direct cause of death or injury. Most earthquake-related casualties (伤亡) result from collapsing walls, flying glasses, and falling objects.
If you are driving, you may not realize what is going on at first because the car may feel like it is going to blow up. Stop the car in as clear and open an area as possible and stay in it until the shaking stops. If it is a really bad quake, turn             on the radio to find an emergency channel to get information. Follow the directions of people directing traffic.
If you are in a mountainous area, watch out for falling rock and other debris that could be loosened by the earthquake.
If you are at the beach, move quickly to higher ground or several hundred yards inland.

Sun Jiarui, a 10-year-old girl from Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, recently becomes famous online for her cooking skills. Sun has learnt to cook from her father for two years and now she can cook more than 50 dishes. Can you cook? If so, what dishes are you good at?

For middle and primary school students, being able to cook will become a must. A new curriculum standard (课程标准) for labor (劳动) education recently came out. Starting from 2022 fall term, students are required to take courses on labor skills. The standard includes different labor tasks. The first is daily housework, including cleaning, organizing, cooking, and repairing home appliances. The next is productive labor (生产劳动), such as making traditional handicraft (手工艺品), and using new technologies like 3D printing. One more type is community work.

Labor education aims to develop students’ basic life skills and good working habits. School education didn’t value (重视) it in the past. According to a report in 2019, it takes Chinese kids only 12 minutes a day to do housework, compared with 72 minutes for American students each day and 30 minutes for French students.

Liu Fang, a mother of 6-year-old twins in Beijing, is a strong supporter of labor education. In the past year, she has trained her daughters to do household chores and make simple dishes for the family. “By doing housework, their hand-eye coordination (协调), time management and organization skills can be trained and it’s also good to help them relax,” said Liu.
