Now a real-life “ghost city” is being built in the US. But luckily, it has nothing to do with zombies –it is going to be a place to test the technology of the future.
Called CITE–the Center for Innovation, Testing and Evaluation (创新测评)–the city is the idea of technology company Pegasus Global Holdings. Covering an area of 15 square miles, this small, empty city sits in the middle of the New Mexico desert (沙漠), since we can't afford to test the latest technologies in the cities that we live in.
“It will be a true laboratory without safety problems that come with people living there. Here you can break things and run into things, and get used to how they work, before taking them out into the market,” Pegasus managing director Robert Brumley told technology magazine Wired.
In fact, without worrying about hurting people, anybody with a new idea can ask to test it in this city.
Just think about the possibilities – A. driverless cars can move freely on the streets, B. homes with robots can be designed, C. shared bikes can be seen everywhere and D. energy sources like nuclear (核的) power can also be put to the test.
As good as the idea may seem, however, there are still doubts about CITE. “One of the most difficult things to do when developing these new technologies is to have them safely move around people, who can suddenly jump out in front of something,” Reese Jones, a beginner of Singularity University, US, Fortune magazine.
Jones is worried that, even if a technology does perfectly well in CITE, introducing it to a real city will still be a whole different story because there will be people living in the city.
But no matter what, perhaps we should wait until CITE is finished in 2019. Maybe it will turn out to work just fine.

These days, many teenagers watch thousands of hours’ programs on TV or short videos on smart phones. However, some studies show these teenagers don’t have any media literacy(媒体素养)they need. It’s hard for them to think about the information they see.
One study showed more than 80 percent of the middle school students didn’t know which they watched were real stories or ads looked like news. Also, the apps like Tik Tok, or Snapchat on smart phones only send teenagers the similar short videos according to their interest. So teenagers have few chances to get something new or different. This makes it harder for them to agree with others’ new or different ideas.
Stanford professor Kevin John teaches a class called Media Effects(效应). He tries to help his students learn media literacy. The professor thinks some news stations only partly tell the truth. He also thinks the short video makers do worse. He gave an example. From Picture 1, people may think the mother lion is eating her kid, but from Picture 2, people can see that she just wants to take her sleepy kid away. So he thinks students should avoid(避免)one- side story.
“With a news story, news stations tell you what they think are the important, but in short videos, the video makers just want to catch your eyes to get more likes.” said John, “If a person has media literacy, he or she will know each story is not only about one side at this time.”
But how can teenagers have media literacy? Some experts think the school is the best place to teach it. Others believe everyone should help teenagers learn the skill.
Many experts advise the best time to start learning the skill is at the age of 12. But little kids should learn some basic(基本的)ideas even earlier. “It’s never too early to start learning media literacy.” John said.

Women make up 50 percent of world’s population and yet they are not treated equally. They hold less than one-fifth of the all parliamentary (议会) seats around the world, occupy less than 19 percent of board (董事会) seats in Fortune 500 companies and earn 17 percent less than men for similar skills and positions. As a group, they are passed over and looked down on.
On March 8 every year, millions of women around the world celebrate International Women’s Day. It is possible that you may not have heard about the International Women’s Day in the United States. Yet Women's Day had its origin in the United States.
Women’s Day was first celebrated in February 1909 in the US to mark the one-year anniversary of the New York Garment Worker’s Strike of 1908. Women used the chance to fight against warring and fight for women’s vote rights.
Did you know that it was a Women’s Day protest in St. Petersburg in 1917, which led to the revolution (革命) for bringing down the Russian empire? After the Russian revolution, Women’s Day came to be celebrated as a communist (共产主义的) or socialist (社会主义的) holiday. As a result, the United States government didn’t accept it as a holiday.
Today Women’s Day is celebrated in places such as China and Russia as a sort of state-approved Valentine's Day or Mother's Day. The tradition in these countries is to give flowers and gifts to the important women in one's life.
In 1975, the United Nations officially announced March 8 as International Women’s Day. Since then, it has been a practice to suggest an annual theme for each year. The theme for 2016 is "Pledge For Parity." It calls on women and men to challenge the present state and inspire positive change in their communities and workplaces.
There is a lot that needs to be done. As a society, we need to offer women and girls chances to make their dreams come true, have equal chances for leadership, respect and value differences, and develop a better work environment. This day challenges and reminds that everyone can be a leader in their own small way and can take positive steps to bring about gender equality.
Our world can truly be balanced when we use the potential that women have to offer. As we prepare children for the future, it is important that girls and women not be left behind.
