I travel a lot, and I find out different “styles” of giving directions every time I ask“How can I get to the post office?”

In Japan, people use landmarks (地标) in their directions because most streets don’t have names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight ahead and turn left at the hotel. The post office is across from the bus stop.”

In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are no towns or buildings in many places.Instead oflandmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas, for example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.”

People in Los Angeles, California have no idea of distance. They measure (测量) distance in time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” you ask, “Oh,” they answer, “It’s about five minutes from here.”

It’s true that a person doesn’t know the answer sometimes. What happens in such a situation? A New Yorker might say, “Sorry, I don’t know.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers, “I don’t know.” People believe in that “I don’t know.” is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A tourist can get very, very lost in Yucatan!

If you are a nature lover, you’ll enjoy reading A Walk in the Woods. It’s a true comic(喜剧的)story. The writer is Bill Bryson.

After staying in the UK for 20 years, Bryson decided to return to the US to know about his hometown by hiking(徒步旅行)the Appalachian Trail(阿巴拉契亚山道), which is about 3,500 kilometers long. This book describes many beautiful scenes, such as quiet forests and beautiful lakes. Bryson was not alone, but with his old friend, Stephen. The book is not just about funny hiking. Bryson also talks about the environmental problems. I arrived in Greece late because my flight was delayed (延误) for more than three hours. Luckily, my hotel hostess was still at the airport waiting to pick me up. We arrived at the hotel after a 40-minute drive. It was already 11:00 p.m..

As Greece was the last place on my travel list, I didn’t have much money left. I decided not to eat dinner. Instead, I would have a cheap breakfast the next day. Knowing this, the hostess hugged me, said something in Greek, and left. I guessed this was a good night hug and prepared to go to bed.

After a while, the hostess came back with some cheese, eggs, and salad. I was surprised by the benevolence. The meal was delicious. Although I tried to give the hostess money, she refused. All my worries of the day went away and I went to bed smiling.

Before I left the next morning, I hid €20 and a thank-you note under my pillow (枕头). I wanted to make sure it would be too late to return it to me when the hostess found it.

I loved the history, culture and natural beauty of Greece. The most unforgettable part for me, however, was that a friendly Greek gave a hungry stranger a big surprise.
