"Well, we're in our new house. Let's get a new pet." Mrs. Brown says to her husband.
"That sounds like a very good idea," he answers. "Do you want to see the ads(广告) in the newspaper?"
"Let's go to the animal center. Many pets there need homes. Tomorrow is Saturday, so we can both go," she says.
The next morning the Browns meet Mr. Snow at the animal center. "We want to be sure that the pets here go to good homes," Mr. Snow says, "So I need to ask you some questions."
After they talk for a while, the Browns decide to get a small dog. It wouldn't need a big house or a big yard. A small dog would bark (吠) and warn (警告) them if someone try to break into (闯入)their house. After Mr. Snow gives the Browns a book on pet care, they choose one and want to take her home right away. But the animal doctor doesn’t check her yet. So Mr. Snow tells them to return on Sunday.

“Whoosh!” The ball flew into the net and the game was finally over. This game had gone into overtime (加时赛) twice. Until the last goal was scored, no one had any idea which team would win.
Dave felt so bad because his team had lost. He liked playing soccer, but he liked winning even more. Now the two teams should have a picnic together. Dave did not want to eat lunch with the other team. The other team would probably brag (显摆) by talking about how they won the game.
Dave went to the locker room (更衣室) to change out of his soccer clothes. There the coach talked to the team about what they had done well. They also talked about how they could improve. Then everybody walked outside towards the picnic table.
One of the players from the other team was standing near the picnic table. He handed Dave a paper plate. “Hi, I’m Miguel,” he said.

The love of Yuan Rishe for the environment grew out of a story she heard as a child: Not having succeeded finding a way to recycle (回收利用) her used batteries (电池) in China, a German woman brought them back to Germany.

After learning that batteries could cause pollution, Yuan started saving the used ones from her toys in a bag. She believed that it was her mission (使命) to protect the environment. When she heard that a children’s group was recycling used batteries, she sent them there right away. To her surprise, the group sent her a thank-you note, which put her on the way to environmental protection.

In 1999, 6-year-old Yuan organized a paper-recycling activity. Her team put a box at the back of their classroom and used it to collect waste paper. The money they made by selling wastepaper was then used to buy saplings (小树苗) to plant. The activity also made Yuan the only school student to win a Ford Conservation and Environmental Grant in 2001.

In 2004, Yuan made a big plan: to plant 2,008 trees on wasteland together with other children before Beijing 2008 Olympic Games! However, many students threw cold water on it, instead of encouraging Yuan. Feeling upset for a short time, Yuan then turned to Wei Guiying, also an environmentalist, for help. Wei offered 0.7 hectares of land without any hesitation. How encouraged Yuan was! Besides, with the help of school students across the country, Yuan succeeded at last.

Now, Yuan, a primary school teacher, hopes to plant the seeds (种子) of environmental protection in her students. “It’s great to see them learning from every environmental protection activity,” she says.
