You pick up your phone and stare at it. The screen unlocks at once. But it won’t do that for anyone else. The phone knows who you are. It recognizes the shape of your face. Welcome to the world of the latest iphone. It comes with a feature called Face ID.

Your face isn’t the only characteristic you can use as a password. Many smart phones already accept fingerprint recognition. Other safety systems check the shape of the ear, patterns in the eye, or the way a person walks. All of these characteristics called biometrics (生物识别技术) are unusual enough to identify someone.

People like using biometrics for safety because they’re easy. You can’t misplace or forget your own face. They’re also usually very safe. It’s hard to copy another person’s body parts. But it’s not impossible!

And the face may be one of the easiest body parts to copy. Most teens post plenty of photos online. These could probably help someone hack into(入侵) a safety system. In 2016, researchers at the University of North Carolina collected available Facebook photos. They used them to build 3D models of faces. Then they showed these fake faces to five different facial recognition systems. Four out of five let the cheater in. (Face ID wasn’t part of the test)

Once a biometric password has been stolen, you can’t easily change it. You can’t get a new face! There’s one more thing of Face ID that worries experts. It would be easy for someone else to hold your phone in front of your face to unlock it. For example, an angry sister or brother might do this to hack into your accounts.

What would the world be like if cars could drive themselves？Imagine seeing an empty car passing by on its way to pick up its owner，or a car full of passengers who are reading，listening to music or even sleeping．But none of them are worried about the road ahead．

Well，all of this could be the future of driving．There are several companies，including Google，working on driverless cars．So far，no Google self-driven car has gotten a traffic ticket，but some of them have been in accidents when other cars hit them．

These cars are now still in the testing stages．But，if the tests are successful，these electric self-driven cars could be put into use very soon．

The cars already have many features （特点）allowing them to take the place of drivers during certain situations．Some features include cars being able to park themselves，or slow down when they notice objects close by．They can also control the speed if there are dangerous conditions．

Scientists and engineers believe，with the help of wireless （无线电的）signals，cameras and GPS，we are now at a stage where creating a safe self-driven car might be possible．

The cause of deadly road accidents is usually careless drivers or dangerous conditions．The self-driven car may be able to prevent these．However，some people do not like the idea．American lawyer Whit Drake，for example，doesn't believe these cars are safe．He thinks that technologies can also be mistakes．

Chinese scientists have released a new geologic map of the moon. They say it is the world’s most detailed map of the moon’s surface to date. The mapping project took more than a hundred researchers 10 years to complete.

The mapping work used data from the Chang’e missions as the main source. It also used high-quality data from international exploration programmes. China started the Chang’e programme in 2004. Since then, the country has sent various landers and rovers (探测器) to the moon in order to collect data.

The new map was drawn at a scale of 1: 2, 500, 000. On this map, we can see 12, 341 impact craters (撞击坑), 81 impact basins (撞击盆地), 17 different rock types and 14 unique types of structures. The map also shows the locations of the leading sites of the Chang’e missions.

The most detailed map provides a lot of information about the geology of the moon and its evolution. It is expected to make a great contribution to scientific research. It can also help select the landing sites on the moon for future exploration missions.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has made a number of regional maps of the moon with data from the Apollo missions. However, those maps were completed at different times with different levels of quality. So they were not able to be directly used together. The Apollo programme succeeded in preparing and landing the first humans on the moon between the years of 1968 and 1972.

“The USGS did put its regional maps together to complete a 1:5 million-scale map in 2020,” said the researchers. “That map, however, is less detailed in comparison to China’s 1: 2.5 million scale map.”
