Mr. Wayne was an old man with a bad temper （脾气）. Kids were afraid to get close to his house, let alone picking apples in his yard.

One day, 12-year-old Jessica and her friend Mia had to walk past Mr. Wayne’s house. When Jessica saw him outside, she suggested they should cross the street and walk on the other side. But Mia said they didn’t need to.

When Mr. Wayne saw Mia, he smiled and said, “Hello, Mia! I see you have a new friend with you today.” Mia smiled back. Mr. Wayne was friendly and gave them each a fresh apple.

Later, Jessica asked Mia, “Everyone says he is the most unwelcoming person in town. Why was he so kind to us?” Mia explained that when she first walked past his house, she was also afraid of him. But she imagined there was an invisible（无形的） smile on his face and started talking to him. At first she only said “hello”, but then began talking to him more every time she saw him.

“An invisible smile?” Jessica was puzzled （困惑的）. “Yes,” answered Mia. “My grandma told me to try that. She said smiles could spread. So if we keep trying to smile at someone, sooner or later they will smile back. Because most people can’t refuse to smile back at a friendly face.”

One morning, a blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held a sign which said, “I am blind. Please help me.”

There were only a few coins in the hat. A man was walking by. He took out a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words on it. He put the sign back so that everyone walked by could see the new words.

Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, “Are you the one who changed my sign in the morning? What did you write? ”

The man said, “I only wrote the truth. I said what you said, but in a different way.” What he had written was, “Today is a beautiful day, but I can’t see it.”

Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing? Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first simply told people to help by putting some money in the hat. The second sign told people that they were able to enjoy the beauty of the day, but the boy could not enjoy it because he was blind.

The first sign simply said the boy was blind, while the second sign told people they were lucky that they were not blind. There are at least two lessons we can learn from this simple story. The first is…The second is…

The other day I watched a video on TikTok that made me c_________. The video showed us that a soldier was talking to his three-year-old ________/'dɔːtə/. The little girl broke down in tears(眼泪). (A) She was unable to control herself, and kept wiping(擦) tears on her face with her hands while answering her father’s words. Dad said, “Is my baby missing Daddy?” “Yes,” said the girl, nodding her head and crying. Dad said, “My baby, don’t cry. Dad will come home, but Dad can’t go home now.” The girl still sobbed(抽噎) and nodded. She was trying not to cry, but she couldn’t keep her mouth(B) _________ (close).

I don’t know whether this man is a Russian soldier or a Ukrainian(乌克兰的) soldier. But all I know is that he is the father of a child. When I was watching this video, I could not stop my tears(C) _________ (run)out of my eyes, wishing for the world peace and no war, and praying(祈祷) for the safe return of the baby’s father.
