"Three apples have changed the world. One is for Eve, one is for Newton. The third is in the hands of Steve Jobs." said someone.

Steve Jobs was the former CEO of the Apple computer company which was set up in his parents' garage (车库) on April Fool's Day, 1976. Through many years' hard work, Jobs and his Apple products were a great success. People believe he has made the world a better place. Many young people also think of Apple products as a fashion symbol.

Because of his great achievements in this area, he was honoured with a number of awards including the National Medal of Technology in 1985, the Times cover character (封面人物) and the Most Successful Manager in 1997.

Jobs' road to success wasn't an easy one. He experienced several ups and downs, but he was still standing. Just as Hemingway in The Old Man and the Sea said, "A man can be destroyed, but not be defeated (打败)." So he was considered as an American hero.

What did Jobs' workers and family members think of him?

On one hand, some workers described him as a strange, bad-tempered (坏脾气的) boss. They said he was impatient with those who disagreed with him or didn't understand his ideas. On the other hand, his family members thought of him as a home-loving dad with each of his four children. He worried about all the things of them, such as their boyfriends, travel, safety and even skirt length. Though he was quite busy, he still attended his daughter's graduation party.

Both of Li Shizhen’s grandfather and father were doctors. 【小题2】. He always took a bag of medicine and cured people in the villages. His father wrote several medical (医学的) books.

Li Shizhen often helped his father in his medical practice when he was young. His father wanted him to work in the court (朝廷). Li Shizhen studied for the exams and passed the country-level examination, but he was never able to pass the imperial examination (殿试).

When he was 38, he helped the son of the Prince of Chu become healthy again and was invited to be a member in that court. A few years later, he became an official (官员) at the Imperial Medical Institute.

Can you write down a Chinese word being read to you in a short time?

Lu Jialei, 14, from Hangzhou Foreign Language School, won the first place in the CCTV Chinese Characters Dictation Competition(《中国汉字听写大会》) on Oct. 18, 2013. About 160 students took part in it. The host read a word to each of them, explained its meaning and giving sentences. The contestant(比赛者) was required to write down the word within half a minute.

To prepare for the contest, she and her teammates studied the Modern Chinese Dictionary for 10 days. There are more than 56,000 entries(词条) including characters, words and phrases in it. She also had a secret weapon. She had well studied how Chinese words were made up of.

In the final, judges gave her the word “wanluan” and said it means “graceful and beautiful”. The word was so strange to her that she had never heard of it. But she made a good guess. Chinese characters meaning beautiful often have “女” in them, while many Chinese characters pronounced “luan” have “亦”. So she wrote down “婉娈”. It turned out that her guess was right.

Winning the contest was a “surprise” to Lu. “I am not the smartest one,” she said. “But I paid attention to details and did the best this time.”

“When others are interested in the plot of the story, she looks at how the author uses words and sentences to express himself or herself,” said Su Yunsheng, Lu’s Chinese teacher. Su is happy to see students like Lu find the beauty of Chinese language. “Besides using something Chinese and having Chinese traditional festivals, learning to write Chinese characters is also an important part of inheriting (传承) Chinese culture,” said Su.
