One in every 121 Americans share the last name“Smith”. It is also the most used last name in the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, a study finds.

The study also finds that many people in Asia share the same family names. In China, there are about 2, 000 family names in use today, but about 50% of all Han Chinese people share the same 19 family names! The most used family name is Wang. One in every 13 people have “Wang”to be the family name. In South Korea, one in five are named “Kim”, and in Vietnam, 25% of people are named “Nguyen”.

Where do these most used last names come from? Some people may have last names from an occupation or the name of a place. “Cook” and “Hill” are two of the most common (最常见的) family names. “Cook” comes from the job people do and “Hill” is from the place people live in. Some common last names come from the people in their families. Often a son gets his last name from his father by putting “s” or “son” at the end of his father’s given name. Thomson, Wilson, Roberts and Davis are all common last names.

My name is Tim, and I have a brother, Frank. Frank and I like eggs for breakfast. Frank also likes oranges for breakfast, but I don’t. We both like hamburgers for lunch.
