On May 5,2017, China’s home-made passenger aircraft(飞机)C919 completed its 90-minute first flight and landed safely back at Pudong Airport in Shanghai.

C919 is developed by COMAC, a Chinese aircraft company. It is designed to compete with Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. The first C919 aircraft can carry 168 passengers and is able to fly a distance between 4,075 and 5, 555 kilometers. It’s reported that a C919 costs around 50 million dollars, less than half of a Boeing 737 or an Airbus A320. Up to now, more than 570 aircrafts have been ordered from 23 customers, mostly Chinese, but also American and Thai companies or airlines. COMAC aims to take one fifth of the world’s narrow-body aircraft market and one third of the Chinese market by 2035.

The name C919 has its special meanings. The letter C stands for both “COMAC” and “China”. The number 9 is pronounced as jiu in Chinese, which means “forever”. And the number 19 refers to its capacity(容量) of 190 passengers.

The large passenger aircraft is praised as “the flower of modern industry”. It is a symbol of the nation’s industrial and technological standards as well as the comprehensive(综合的) power. In order to realize the century dream of flying in the sky and the strategy(战略) of the nation, COMAC bears the nation’s dream and people’s trust. China considers it as a national pride.

A Special Sleeping Pill

Sleeping problems are common nowadays. Many people use sleeping pills (安眠药) to get enough sleep. But they can be bad for our health. Here’s a “pill” that sends out little electronic pulses (电子脉冲) . It’s not a pill but a small tool. It can relax your brain. If you hold it in your hand, you will feel relaxed and fall asleep quickly.

Melanin (黑色素) in our body gives color to the hair, skin (皮肤) and eyes, and it naturally protects (保护) the skin from sunshine. Scientists recently made a special kind of melanin cream. They tested it on people’s injured skin. They found that the cream could help the skin stay the same as before. The cream only sits on the skin once it’s put on, so it’s very safe to use.

Taking Pictures on the Moon
Scientists from NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) made a new camera for astronauts, which could be used to take photos on the moon. It’s very sensitive (敏感的) to light, so it can take pictures in the dark environment of space. It can also work in both hot and cold environments of the moon from -200℃ to 120℃. The camera was so special that astronauts wearing space suits could easily use it.

The opening of the Beijing—Zhangjiakou high-speed railway took place in December, 2019. The railway is a milestone in China’s railway development because it has used the latest technologies in railway building.

The railway is 174 kilometers long, with 10 stations. The stations are managed by one control center, which is described by China Railway Beijing Group — also known as CR Bejing — as an “intelligent (智能的) brain”. The center collects and shares the stations’ real-time information. “With the information, the workers in the center can control the stations’ lighting and temperature, monitor (监测) trains’ operation and deal with emergencies(紧急情况).” said Zhu Dianping, from CR Beiing.

Zhu said some trains on the Bejing—Zhangjiakou line are “smart” as they provide 5G signals and wireless charging (无线充电) for passengers, as well as intelligent lighting. These trains can start and stop, open and close doors, and deal with emergencies themselves.

All the ten stations provide e-ticket services. Travelers who have bought tickets online can use their ID cards instead of waiting in line for paper tickets.

At Qinghe Railway Station in Beijing, China’s first visual remote ticket vending machine (远程可视售票机) has been installed (安装) to help passengers who are not able to afford tickets online. Passengers keep in touch with the conductor through the machine and buy tickets according to video instructions.

In addition, the Badaling Great Wall Station, the deepest underground railway station in China, is another great example of the country’s achievements in railway building.

【小题1】Which can be inferred (推断)according to the passage?

A computer can get very hot when it works on a lot of programs. It can cost a lot to cool the computer. So some scientists want to know what would happen when if the heat from the computer could be used.

Large Internet companies such as Google and Microsoft have thousands of computers. As these computers deal with information, they produce lots of heat, so they need huge cooling systems. These systems send the heat into the air.

A company in the Netherlands thinks paying to make the computers work and then paying again to cool them are a waste of energy. So the company developed a special device—the e-Radiator.

Boaz Leupe, head of the company, says that e-Radiator works as a heating system and saves money. He explains that the energy is used twice—once to heat the home and once to cool the computer and that the users don't have to pay to cool their computers.

Five homeowners in the Netherlands are testing the heating system in their homes.

"We pay for the computer usage, so in that way, homeowners get heating for free." Boaz says.

Jan Visser is one of the homeowners. "If you use the computer more, the e-Radiator produces more heat," he says. "It cannot provide enough heat if you don't use your computer often." But he is ready to try it. It's a great help to his family.

The company says e-Radiators produce heat temperature of up to 55℃. It says the system could save its users about $ 440 a year.

【小题1】Which of the following is true?
A.Before the e-Radiator appears, the heat of a computer is usually sent into the air.
B.Google and Microsoft don't need huge cooling systems.
C.Google and Microsoft developed a special device-the e-Radiator.
D.The heat of a computer usually makes the computer work better before the e-Radiator appears.
【小题2】What is the e-Radiator mainly used to do?
A.To help GoogleB.To provide heat.C.To heat the computer.D.To clean the computer.
【小题3】How much could the system save its users a month?
A.About 220 dollars.B.About 440 dollars.C.About 44 dollarsD.About 36 dollars.
【小题4】What would be the best title for the passage?
A.A New CompanyB.How to Heat Computers
C.A New Way to Heat HomesD.How to Solve Environment Problems
