Garbage(垃圾) Island
You can’t see it from the air. It’s almost impossible to see from a ship. But somewhere in the North Pacific is a huge island of garbage, just below the water surface.

What is the island made of?
The garbage island is not an island, but a collection of millions of plastic and other objects. The water movements of Pacific Ocean bring the objects together and cause them to go around in a big circle.
Charles Moore found it in 1997 and named it “the Great Pacific Garbage Patch” .
Where does all the plastic come from?
Much of the garbage comes from everyday objects, such as shopping bags and water bottles. Some of these objects finally reach the ocean. Garbage from the western coast of North America takes about six years to reach it. Objects from East Asia take about a year. Other garbage comes from ships passing through the area.
Is the Garbage Patch dangerous?
The larger pieces of garbage are a problem for wildlife. For example, sea turtles(海龟)and seabirds often think the plastic is their food. They eat the plastic and die.
In addition, the plastic stops sunlight from reaching deeper water. Without sunlight, very small sea animals die. Then, there is less food for larger fish to eat.
What can we do to help stop it?
Cleaning up the island isn’t easy. But we can make people realize the problem. One environmentalist(环保主义者), David de Rothschild, is sailing around the world in boat made of plastic bottles to teach people about the problem of garbage in the sea.
Another idea is that we can recycle the plastic garbage. Environmental engineer Cesar Harada is building a robot that collects pieces of plastic. Harada hopes to use his robot in the Pacific. Harada also has a website for reporting environmental problems. He says, “I hope everybody can become an environmental activist.”

It is everyone's duty to help animals to stop extinction (灭绝). As a student, there are so many things you can do yourself too! Please look at the following tips (建议) to help the endangered animals.

Send a letter to your local environment protecting center and show how you feel about the quick extinction of animals. Use the facts to write what you have found. Give some advice to the officers who make the strong rules to save animals.

Draw pictures and make a poster. Put this poster somewhere at school or where people will usually see it. Add some texts in the sign to make it clear why you care about the loss (丧失) of animals. It may encourage people to do something to protect the animals.

Avoid buying things that come from endangered species (物种). When you travel, be careful about what you buy. You shouldn't buy things made from endangered animals or endangered tree species from forests that the animals live on.

Watch your diet. Before eating meals, you should see if you will break a food chain. If you see somebody doing something bad for the food chain, please stop him at once.

阅读短文,完成下列任务。

Many countries all over the world have National Parks. There are about 7, 000 National Parks around the world. Most of them protect nature as well as the plants and animals that live there, but a few are in towns and cities.

Are there National Parks in England?

There are nine National Parks in England. The first three were the Peak District, the Lake District and Dartmoor, which were all named as National Parks in 1951. Others followed afterwards, such as the North York Moors in 1952, the New Forest in 2005 and the South Downs in 2010.

Are National Parks in England the same as those in other countries?

Many National Parks cover huge areas of land where nobody lives, but in England most of the countryside within them is useful for farming and other activities. As a result, National Parks in England include places where people live and work, as well as wild and beautiful areas where there is little human life.

Why do visitors go to the National Parks?

There are plenty of activities to do in all of the National Parks in England. Visitors can walk or cycle, following marked routes(路线), and many of the parks organize activities for families.

Are there any problems in the National Parks?

There are about 110 million visitors to the parks every year, bringing many benefits (利益) to the areas but bringing problems too. Many popular towns and villages can be crowded with visitors. This results in overcrowded car parks and roads ①choked with traffic. Life can be difficult for people who live there, ③as more and more gift shops and cafes are opened instead of those everyday shops. In popular areas, house prices can become too high for local people making it hard for them to stay in the area.

Another major problem is rubbish. In the parks ②it is a particular (特别的) danger to animals. Broken glass can also cause fires by focusing the rays of the sun. When these start in wild places, they are much harder to control and can damage (毁坏) large areas very quickly.

How can people help?

All National Parks in England promote (倡导) the Countryside Code, which tells people how to take care of their environment. If we followed these rules, the National Parks will be protected (被保护) and continue to give pleasure to many people for a long time.

When Cash Daniels was given “The Conservation Kid” for his efforts to protect the environment in 2021, he was only 12 years old. He got interested in environmental problems a few years ago, when he found plastic on a beach. It got him thinking about the influence that plastic pollution has on the environment, especially on rivers and oceans.

In his research, Cash found that rivers are at the heart of the problem. According to a 2021 report from Science Advances, far more rivers than thought—at least 1, 000 of them—are carrying large number of plastic into our oceans. This hit close to home for Cash. He lives in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The city sits on the Tennessee River, one of the most polluted in the world.

This information motivated(激发)Cash to take action. He made it his mission to clear litter from public spaces and local waterways.

At first, he and his parents worked together to pick up litter near the Tennessee River. But Cash soon realized that he would need more help.

So he organized community cleanup outings. Finally, he and other volunteers removed more than 11, 000 pounds of litter from the river.

Cash has also teamed up with businesses to recycle aluminum cans (铝罐). So far, he has recycled more than 2, 000 pounds of them. The money he earns from that supports river protection efforts.

Cash enjoys getting people, especially other kids, involved in environmental activism. He wrote a children’s book called One Small Piece, which he has read to students in his community. In it, he spent much time explaining the problem of pollution and how streams, rivers, and oceans are interconnected.

In January 2022, together with his friend Ella Grace, he founded Cleanup Kids. So far, The Cleanup Kids has had more than 50 members across the US, Canada, and Australia. The group encourages children to pick up and recycle litter, as well as to raise awareness(意识) among young people to understand how much human life depends on the nature. The goal for the young volunteers is to collect 1 million pieces of litter by the end of 2022. “Kids may be a small percentage of the population,” Cash says. “But they are 100% of the future.”
