Today almost everyone knows computers and the Internet. If I ask you “What is the most important thing in your life ?”, maybe you will say “Computers and the Internet”.

The first computer was made in 1946. It was very big but it worked slowly. Today computers are getting smaller and smaller. But they work faster and faster. What can computers do ? A writer has said, “People can’t live without computers today”.

The Internet came a little later than computers. It is about 25 years later than computers. But now it can be found almost everywhere. We call use it to read books, write letters, do shopping, play games or make friends.

Many students like the Internet very much. They often surf the Internet as soon as they are free. They make friends on the Internet and maybe they have never seen these friends. They don’t know their real names, ages, and even sexes(性别). They are so interested in making the “unreal friends” that they can’t put their hearts into study. ChatGPT is back in the headlines! Open AI, the company behind the popular chatbot, has now introduced a powerful new language model: GPT-4.

On March 14, GPT-4 showed the world how smarter it is than the previous GPT-3.5. One of its best new features is that it can understand pictures. For example, if you show a picture of a phone using the wrong charger (充电器), GPT-4 can tell why the picture looks strange or funny.

But GPT-4’s developments don’t stop there. The new language model can code (用代码编写) classic games like Tetris (俄罗斯方块) in a matter of minutes, and produce the code and layout (布局) for a website based on a hand-made drawing. It can also change the tone (语气) and style based on what you ask it to do. GPT-4 is much easier for students to cheat (作弊) than the older GPT at passing tests, which may worry teachers. According to CNN, GPT-4 did really well on a law school test, with a score in the top 10 percent of test takers. But GPT-3.5 only got a score in the bottom 10 percent.

GPT-4 will also see greater use as a tool to power other apps and services. For example, the language learning app Duolingo plans to use GPT-4 in their upcoming Duolingo Max function. Users can learn languages by talking with AI. Another app, Be My Eyes, will have a digital assistant (数字助手) to help blind people better understand the world around them. The government of Iceland also plans to use GPT-4 to protect the Icelandic language.

There are still problems with the new language model, however. GPT-4 still struggles to get completely correct answers, especially with newer information after September 2021. GPT-4 also sometimes “hallucinates (产生幻觉)”, meaning that it will insist that wrong information is true.

【小题1】What can we infer from Paragraph 2?

【小题3】What worry does GPT-4 bring to teachers?
A.It can change tones based on a user’s input.
B.It may help students cheat on tests easily.

【小题4】How will the Duolingo Max users get help from GPT-4?

C.They can practice languages by talking with AI.
D.They can find many dying languages on the app.
In modern times, the development of electronic books has changed the ways of reading. It is very convenient for readers to download(下载) electronic books on the Internet.
However, experts say that readers will not be able to absorb( 吸收) efficiently what they have read, because the information is shown in such a simple form.“Some e-readers(电子阅览器), such as the Amazon Kindle and Sony Reader, show texts clearly to readers. This encourages the brain to be ‘lazy’ and make readers easily forget what they have just read, ”experts say.
A. student by Princeton University finds that many readers can recall more information after reading if they read paper books. Compared with electronic books, paper books are less convenient for readers to read. Such difficulty in reading makes readers cherish(珍惜) the information they are reading and encourage their brain to think. As a result, the efficiency of reading will be improved greatly. Experts say if readers get information actively, that is to say, if they read paper books, they will be able to remember the information longer than those who passively read electronic books.
Others experts say that e-readers and computers may stop us from absorbing information, because the screens may make you feel that the words on the screen are not important. Mr. Lehrer, an expert, said, “E-readers have changed the reading habits of people, but they make people’s ability of reading degenerate(退化)”

Searching for parking spaces has long been a headache for many office workers in many big cities of China. Parking near their companies for five days a week could cost them a lot of money. At the same time, the price for parking is rising, but most of their spaces remain idle(闲置的)during workdays. Now a new form of sharing economy(经济)has appeared in China—the shared parking space. It has become a huge market in some big cities. In Qingdao, up to 10, 000 personal parking have been turned into shared ones with the help of “Air Parking”, an online shared parking platform developed by a network company from Guangzhou. Through a special app, users can either share or order a parking place. Owners who have idle parking spaces can share some information, including the parking position, license number and time limit(限制)on the platform. With the information, users can easily find the nearest place to park. And the parking cost for shared parking is cheaper. I think shared parking will be more and more popular to the drivers.
