Zhou Youguang, known as the "father of Pinyin" was a Chinese. He was born in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, on 13 January 1906. At the age of ten, he and his family moved to Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. In 1918, he entered Changzhou High School.
Zhou went to St. John's University in Shanghai in 1923. Then he went to Guanghua University in 1925. Later Zhou spent time in Japan as a foreign exchange student. After World War II, he moved to London, and then New York to work as a banker.
Zhou returned to China in 1949 to help his country build a modern economy(经济学). In 1955, the government invited him to make necessary changes to the Chinese language. It took him about three years to design Pinyin, and it was a success.
Today, with the wide use of computers and mobile phones, we use Pinyin to communicate with the world. The system is a bridge between China and the rest of the world."
Zhou died on 14 January 2017 at his home in Beijing, a day after his birthday. At the time, he was the 17th oldest living man in China.

The 63-year-old Zhang Guimei is the principal and founder of Huaping High School for Girls. Twenty years ago, after she went to teach in Huaping County, she happened to know that many girls just disappeared before they finished their studies. She learned that some of them were forced to work and others got married at a young age.

During a home visit, she ran into a l3-year-old girl sitting on the side of the road. The girl cried and told her, “I want to study, I don’t want to marry.” It turned out that the girl’s parents asked her to drop out of school to marry just for 30,000 yuan.

Zhang came to the girl’s house angrily and told her mother, “I will take the child away, and I will pay for her school fees.” But the girl’s mother threatened (威胁) Zhang with death if she stopped the marriage. Finally, Zhang gave up.

“I never saw the girl again. This is a regret I have had in the whole life”, she said.

Since then, a dream has gradually come into being in her heart. Setting up a free high school so that poor girls living in the mountains can get an education.

It is difficult to set up a school, but she never stopped. After years of trying to raise money, in 2008, the Huaping High School for Girls, a free public high school, was founded at the foot of the Shizi Mountain in Huaping.

In the summer of 2011, 100 percent of the first generation of Huaping High School for Girls graduates passed the college entrance examination.

So far, about 1,804 poor girls have been sent to universities, successfully changing their lives.
