The date was like any other day in his life. After school David walked past the shop on the street corner. He stopped to look at the front row of shoes, and he felt sorry for himself. He really wanted to have a new pair for his birthday.
He sadly walked away and thought of how to tell his mother. He knew she would give him anything if she could. But he also knew very well she had little money. He decided not to go home at once, as he looked worried and he didn’t want to make his mother worry about it. So he went to the park and there he sat on the grass. Then he saw a girl in a wheel chair. He found that the girl moved the wheels with her hands. David looked at her carefully and was surprised to see that the girl had no feet. If you find yourself feeling a little less cheerful than you were when days are going from summer to autumn, it’s not your imagination: there is a science-backed reason you feel unhappy easily in the cooler months.

“It’s real,” said Kathryn Roecklein. “The changes don’t always affect everyone in the same way,” she added. “But seasonal mood changes often include less energy, feeling less social, losing interest in favorite activities and changes in sleep — you may have trouble sleeping or want to sleep more than usual.”

There are a lot of reasons why our moods change with the season, but a big factor (因素) is ______. “The hours of day, which are shortest in winter and longest in summer, are the main reason.” Roecklein said. Sunsets are getting earlier and earlier when autumn begins, so it’s not surprising if you feel those mood changes around the same time.

We should remember that “winter blues” is not something we cannot overcome (克服). Here are a few things you can do. First, get yourself bathed in the sun. I’m not the kind of mother who normally brushes and styles her daughter’s hair, and my daughter has never liked sitting quietly long enough for me to do it.

But today, I put a chair outside and let my daughter Sally sit on it. She was sitting high with her eyes closed, skin still wet from the shower, and her messy hair behind her back.

I realized she was taking in every touch from my hands. It was the last time for a week that our bodies would connect. Today, I would send Sally away for a week of summer camp. She didn’t ask to go. This was all my idea. She’s nearly 12, and I notice that I’m with my child nearly 24 hours a day.

Living on a farm without any neighbors, I’ve chosen a life that is quieter than a usual family’s. But instead of requiring space away from me, Sally has increasingly depended on me.

What worries me most is that she has become a “mini-me”. She follows my hobbies, my dreams, and   my opinions. And that was why I pulled her to the summer camp, a nearby wilderness (荒野) camp called Hawk Circle.

After we ate, I drove Sally to Hawk Circle. Once there, we got a tour of the grounds and were introduced to other campers. Sally stood by the group of children, holding my hand, horror in her eyes, trying to work up the courage to join a game of soccer. “I need you for a few more minutes,” she told me, holding my hand tightly (紧紧地).

I pulled away and walked up to one of the camp’s workers. “Excuse me,” I said loudly, “I’d like to introduce you to my daughter. Maybe you could help her meet a few of these kids.” He came over to talk to Sally, and I kissed her and then I disappeared before she realized I was gone.

On my way home, I felt a piece of my soul had been taken from my body. I began to shake. The tears (泪水) came down my face. It took every bit of my strength to keep driving forward.

When I arrived home, I calmed down and reminded myself why I chose this path. I thought to myself, “I want Sally to have a chance to find herself, out of my shadow. I don’t want to see only myself in my child. I want to learn who she is. If I don’t set her free, I fear I’ll never really meet her real personality.”

After 12 years of being together, I want to finally meet my daughter for the first time.
