Beethoven was a talented (有天赋的) child in music. People at that time thought he was as clever as Mozart. His father wanted to make money from his talent, so he told him to practice and play all the time. If he didn’t do that, his father would be angry with him and beat him.
Beethoven was very short and ugly. He couldn’t hear well from the age of 22 and later he heard nothing, but all these unhappy things didn’t make him dislike music. He began to write sonatas (奏鸣曲) at 12, and later he became a great musician.
His life was so short that he didn’t leave many works. But people think he was one of the best musicians in the world.

A good teacher means many things to many people. In my own experience, I think that the people I respect the most and think about the most are those who demand(要求)the most discipline(纪律)from their students.
I think of one teacher in particular that I had in high school. I think she was a good teacher because she was a very strict person. I remember a sign over the classroom door. It was a simple sign that said: “Laboratory—in this room the first five letters of the word are emphasized(强调), not the last seven.” In other words, I guess, labor for her was more important than oratory. She hoped we could listen to her carefully and learned to do some experiments with discipline.
She always prepared for her work carefully, and she demanded that her students do the same. We got lots of homework from her. One time when she had broken her arm, everybody in the class thought that maybe the homework would be less, but it continued just the same. Since she couldn’t write, she stamped her name at the bottom of the papers to show that she had read them.
I think sometimes teachers who demand the most are perhaps liked by students the least. But as time goes by, this discipline really seems to benefit(使受益)the students.
