Do you know how to study better? Let me give you some advice about studying. First, don’t put off (延误) studying. Many students do that. Then they have to cram (死记硬背) the night before the exam. In fact you need good study habits and study a little every day. This way, you will prepare (准备) better for the exams. Second, plan rewards into your study time. For example, if you read 20 pages of the book, you can play one computer game. But only one. Third, stay in a quiet place and turn off your mobile phone. Then you can put your heart into your study. What is language for? Some people seem to think it’s for practising grammar rules and learning long lists of words. That’s wrong! Language is for the exchange of ideas and information. It’s meaningless knowing all about a language if you can’t use it freely.

Many students I have met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they can’t speak correctly or fluently. They are afraid of making mistakes. One shouldn’t be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language. Native speakers make mistakes and break rules, too. Bernard Shaw once wrote, “Foreigners often speak English too correctly.” But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. They’re English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it’s no longer a rule. What used to be wrong becomes right.

People not only make history, but also they make languages. But they can only make their own language. They can’t create another language. So Chinese students should pay attention to the grammar, but they shouldn't overdo it. They should put communication first.

Reading should be part of your life. But the problem is that there’s too much to read these days and too little time to read every word of it. There are hundreds of skills to help you read more quickly. Here are two skills that I think are very good.
Preview—if it’s long and hard. Previewing is very useful for getting a general (总的) idea of heavy reading like long magazine articles and reports. You can read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs carefully, and then you can only read the first sentence of the other paragraphs (段落).
Skim—if it’s short and easy. Skimming is a good way to get a general idea of light reading like popular magazines or the sports, stars and movies of your daily paper.
While skimming, get your eyes to move fast and sweep them across each line. You can pick up only a few key words in each line. Everybody skims differently. You and I may not pick up the same words when we skim the same news, but usually we won’t get very different ideas of what it is all about.
【小题1】What should you do if you want to read a long article quickly?
A.Read every word of it.
B.Read all the paragraphs.
C.Pick up a few key words in each line.
D.Read the first two and the last two paragraphs carefully.
【小题2】The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to (指) _______.
A.skimmingB.previewingC.the wordsD.the news
【小题3】If you read a simple (简单的) article, which reading skill is better to get the general idea?
A.Previewing.B.Skimming.
C.Reading carefully.D.Sweeping each word.
【小题4】The best title (标题) for the passage may be “_______”.
A.Reading is part of lifeB.Previewing and skimming
C.Reading problemsD.Reading skills
