After her parents’ death, Mary travelled to England on a ship with a soldier’s wife. Mrs. Medlock, Mr. Craven’s housekeeper, was waiting for her at the Paddington Station when they arrived in London.The woman was wearing a purple dress and a black hat with some flowers. Mary didn’t like Mrs. Medlock, and Mrs. Medlock didn’t like Mary. “She isn’t very pretty.” She said to the soldier’s wife. “Not like her mother.”

Mrs. Medlock and Mary got on the train to Yorkshire. They found two empty seats and sat down. Mary was a bit lonely now. London was very different from India. Mrs. Medlock asked Mary: “Do you know anything about your uncle?” “No.” said Mary.

“His house is called Misselthwaite Manor. It’s six hundred years old.It is on the moor.There are almost a hundred rooms but most of them are locked.There are pictures and lots of furniture. There’s a park around it with gardens and trees. But there’s nothing else.”

“Your uncle, Mr. Craven, is a hunchback. His wife died ten years ago.He became very sad after her death.He travels all the time now.When he is at home, he doesn’t want to see anyone.” continued Mrs. Medlock, “You must play by yourself in the house or in the gardens. And you mustn’t go into the other rooms.Mr.Craven will be angry if you do.”

It was dark when the train stopped at the station. A carriage was waiting there to take them to the manor. “What is a moor?” She asked Mrs. Medlock. “It’s a wild land. Nothing grows there, only heather. Nothing lives there, only wild horses and sheep.” the housekeeper replied.

They drove for a long time. Finally Mark saw some lights.

“Home at last!” said Mrs. Medlock. A man servant opened the door and Mary found herself in a dark hall. “So this is my new home.” thought Mary.
