Agriculture
To get more food, farmers use large amounts of chemicals(化学制品).When the chemicals are not completely used by the plants, they are washed away by the rainwater into rivers, lakes and seas, which pollute both surface water and underground water.
Industry
Factories and industries oftenreleasepoisonous chemicals into seas, rivers or lakes, which is quite bad for Mother Nature. An example of industrial sea pollution happened in Japan in the 1950s.A local factory had poured waste water with mercury(水银)into the Minamata Bay for 20 years.Tuna fish in the bay took in the mercury and people ate the tuna. Many children were born with birth deformities(畸形).As a result, people lost their, hearing and sight, and thousands of people died in the end.
Sea transportation
When ships transporting oil get damaged on the way,oil spillage(溢出)happens·One major disaster was the Exxon Valdez oil spill. An oil tanker sink off Alaska in 1989 and leaked(泄漏)oil into the ocean. To save cost, some ships also poured unwanted oil from their engine rooms into the sea, thus polluting the oceans·
Home activities
If the waste from the washing of clothes and dishes are not treated and poured into the sea, they will do harm to the sea life. Some diseases may also spread.Sometimes, rubbish is dumped into the sea.

Plastic brings us convenience, and pollution as well.
Some very tiny pieces of plastic are called microplastics ( 微塑料). The largest microplastics can be directly seen.
Use a glass or metal cup instead of a plastic one. Researchers have found that bottled water has more microplastics than tap water.
Since plastic is everywhere, researchers suggest that we should be careful with possible microplastics in life. They may be from baby toys, pens, and even phones we use every day.
A.What’s worse, it’s everywhere. |
B.Avoid heating food in plastic boxes. |
C.Use plastic products widely in our daily life. |
D.Also, the heat of your drinks will encourage microplastics to get into your drinks. |
E.All in all, we should use plastic products properly. |
F.But many of them are small enough to be around us without being seen. |
Air is important to us.
Sadly, the problem of air pollution is getting serious(严重的) today. Air pollution is bad for people’s health.
A.It makes us get sick easily. |
B.We can feel it when it is moving. |
C.Try to find a new way to use the old things again instead of throwing them away. |
D.If we need to go to a place far away from us, we should take the bus or the underground. |
E.We can live for a few days without food or water, but we cannot live for more than a few minutes without air. |
F.It is necessary for us to sort the rubbish. |
The Amazon rainforest covers 5.5 million square kilometers. That’s about half the size of China! However, according to a new study, the Amazon rainforest may become grassland (草原) in a few years.
The Amazon is the world’s biggest rainforest. Climate change and human activities make it “sick”. Usually, the rainforest can fix itself. But now, it feels too “tired” to get better. The trees may die and the rainforest could turn into a hot, dry grassland.
Why is the Amazon “sick”? The Amazon is one of the world’s wettest places. But since 2005, three droughts have hit the rainforest. They were caused by climate change. The trees don’t have enough water to grow. What’s worse, as they become dry, they can easily catch fire.
On the other hand, people cut down rainforest trees for wood. They burn the forest to make farmland. They clear trees to find minerals (矿产). All these activities have caused about 17 percent of the rainforest to disappear.
The Amazon is like the lungs of our planet. The rich plants there take carbon dioxide (CO₂) out of the air and make oxygen. They make more than 20 percent of the planet’s oxygen. What will happen if we lose it? If the Amazon “dies”, there will be more CO₂ and our earth will become even hotter.
Also, the Amazon is home to over 3 million animals and plants. Many of them can’t live anywhere else. They would very likely just disappear.
