This Thursday, across the US, kids are skipping school(缺课)and going to work with their parents. They’ll be making copies, sending faxes(传真)and sweeping floors. This is because April 28 is Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day all over the US. This holiday shows kids what it means to be a grown-up in the working world.
I still remember when this day started, I was very happy. Not only did I have the chance to miss school, but I also got to sit in my dad’s taxi all day long and we would go to a restaurant for lunch.
But after only 20 minutes of driving around the city. I was very bored. I couldn’t read my book in the car as I would get carsick(晕车)and my dad didn’t like to turn on the radio. I got hot and uncomfortable. people wouldn’t get into his taxi because they thought he already had a passenger: me—so nothing happened. It seemed years before we went out for lunch. I actually started to miss school.
While the point of the day is to give kids a chance to experience real-life jobs and give them an idea of the possibilities(可能性) for their futures, I got something completely different from the day. I learned to appreciate(重视) school. Where else do you get to play with your friends, do science experiments, read great books and write stories all in one day?
Just as you’ll have to learn to love your job later in life, learn to love school now. If you don’t already, try spending the day at work with your dad.

She used to sleep on the sidewalk of the Fifth Street Post Office. I could smell her before I came close. She wore dirty clothes and her mouth was nearly toothless. If she was not asleep, she talked to herself. What a poor old lady!

One day, we had lots of food left over. I thought about the old lady. She might be still hungry. So I packed the food up and rode over to the Fifth Street. It was a cold night. There was hardly anyone out. But I knew she would stay at the same place and I would find her easily. There she was, sitting against a tree near the post office. She was dressed as she always was. I went to her and said, “I’ve brought you some food. Would you like some turkey and apple pie?”
However, the old woman didn’t seem to be very excited about this. She looked at me and said, “Oh, but someone has given me food earlier and I’m quite full now. Why don’t you take it to someone else who needs it?”
Her manner was gracious (亲切的). I was the person who didn’t know what to say. An old lady whose life was worse than most of us still thought about others. Why don’t more of us do that?

Many people might think that if they had more money, then they would be happier in life. For example, people might look at what others have, like expensive clothes or nice cars, and wish they could have the same. But the things that money can buy can’t bring happiness to a person for long.

But is that really true? Studies have found that money can, in fact, make people happier. Instead, it’s giving money to others that makes people happy. It could be buying a present for a friend or a family member. .It could be buying a homeless person food to eat. It could be givng money to a person in need. Just think about the last time you used your own money to do something for someone else. How did you feel? Whether it is a small or large amount of money. People feel happier when they give. This is because making someone else happy makes the giver happy, too.

This idea of connecting your happiness to the happiness of others is described as a ubuntu in an African language. There is even a story about a man visiting Africa who asked some kids to race to a nearby tree .The first child to touch the tree would get a sweet treat. Surprising, all the children held hands and ran together They all touched the tree at the same time. The man asked why they had done this. The children simply said they could only enjoy eating the treat if everyone had one.
