Liu Xiaosheng is 73 years old. Last summer vacation, he taught children English every morning. Liu was a foreign language teacher at a university in Chongqing before.
In 2012, he bought a small house in Guizhou. From then on, he went to Guizhou to spend the summer with his family every year. One evening, he saw a neighbor’s child had problems in learning English and he wanted to help the boy. So, he began to teach him English for free.
In this way, Liu had his first student. Soon, some people in the village knew the news and more and more children came to learn. At first, Liu taught in his living room. But the room wasn’t big enough to hold all the children. Then, Liu moved into the corridor (走廊) for more space. But soon, the corridor was packed with students. He is now known as the “courtyard teacher”.
