In some western countries, many children do chores to get pocket money (零花钱). They usually start to do this when they are ten years old.
School students have to do homework and study for tests. They don’t have much free time on weekdays. They often do chores on weekends.
Young kids only do easy chores. So they don’t get much money. But that’s enough. Many of them only want to buy candy. And candy is cheap! They often help do the dishes, sweep the floor, or feed the pet cat or dog.
When they get older, they want to buy more and more things. They want things that are more expensive than candy. So they have to work harder! They often help their parents wash the family car, cut the grass, or cook meals.
Some jobs are a good way for kids to learn new things. For example, they can learn how to use a lawnmower (割草机) or how to cook. Of course, their parents help them at first.

John Smith is an exchange student from New York. Here is a letter to his friend in his hometown.
Dear David, How time flies! It’s been 3 months since I came to China. I’m having a great time on my student exchange(交换) program here. So far, I’ve completely got used to the life here and have known a lot about traditional Chinese culture. I’d like to share some with you. In China, there are many different kinds of traditional art forms, such as paper cutting, Chinese clay art and so on. Among them, the kite interests me most. The first ancient Chinese kite appeared more than 2,000 years ago. Then flying kites was spread into Japan, Korea and Malaysia during the Tang Dynasty and the Song Dynasty. Kites are regarded as the earliest craft(飞行器). They played an important role in the process of inventing the plane. Tea culture is important in China. Tea was discovered as a kind of drink by accident about 5,000 years ago. It is believed that tea was brought to Korea and Japan during the 6th and 7th centuries. It didn’t appear in England until around 1660. The tea trade from China to Western countries took place in the 19th century. Now tea has become one of the most popular drinks around the world. Lastly, I’d like to tell you something about one of the traditional Chinese festivals—the Mid-Autumn Festival. It is on the fifteenth day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar(阴历). Chinese people have been celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival and enjoying mooncakes for centuries. If you’d like to know more about traditional Chinese culture, I will talk about it in the next letter. Best wishes! Yours, John |

Different countries have different customs in the world. It’s very important for us to know about them.
When you go to the US, someone often says to you “give me five”. What should you do?
Do not get five dollars from your pocket. It will make others laugh! The person is not asking for your money, but your fingers.
In the US, “give me five” or “give me the high five” is a popular gesture (动作). You can see it often in films or on TV. It means hitting each other’s right hands together. People do it when they meet for the first time or something happy happens. For example, a student has good marks in exams. If a football team wins a game, the players will give high fives to everyone around to celebrate.
This gesture may come from the old Roman gesture of raising the right arm for the emperor (皇帝). This showed the person raising his arm did not have a sword (剑) in his hand. Why not try to give the high five to your friends?
