Dear Laura,

Thanks for your message. Yes, I’m having a great time on my student exchange program in France. I was a bit nervous before I arrived here, but there was no reason to be. My host family is really nice. They go out of their way to make me feel at home. The grandmother has a teenage granddaughter about my age. She’s really kind and she always talks to me in French to help me practice. You wouldn’t believe how quickly my French has improved because of that.

My biggest challenge is learning how to behave at the dinner table. As you can imagine, things are very different from the way they are at home. For example, you shouldn’t put your bread on your plate. You should put it on the table! I thought that was pretty strange at first, but now I’m used to it. Another example is that you shouldn’t eat anything with your hands except bread, not even fruit. Another thing is it’s impolite to say that you’re full. If you don’t want any more food, you should just say, “That was delicious.” Also, you shouldn’t put your elbows (肘部) on the table. I have to say that I find it difficult to remember everything, but I’m gradually getting used to it. I don’t find French customs (习俗) so strange any more.

I’ll write again soon and tell you more about my life in France. Hope you’re having a good school year.

Yours,

Wang Kun

When you think of Beijing, the beautiful green waters and hills of Beihai Park and the grand and beautiful Forbidden City will come to your mind.

In recent years, groups of modern buildings and specially designed plazas have appeared on Beijing’s streets. Standing in the street, you can feel how Beijing has changed. But foreigners still like to go to the hutongs.

The word hutong comes from the Mongolian language. Hutongs come to Beijing more than 700 years ago. As time passed, the hutongs have remained, and have become an important part of the essence of Beijing.

Many foreigners, when they come to Beijing from their far countries, will go directly to visit the hutongs after setting down. They sit in the courtyards, chatting with the native Beijingers about neighbors and their life. It seems that through their chatting, they can find the true meaning of Chinese family life.

Waving good-bye, they have to leave the hutongs, and say goodbye to the families with whom they have chatted happily. But they don’t feel like leaving. The hutongs have brought great enjoyment to them.

Although every country has it own special cultural background, economic situation and level and feelings are similar. The hutong is a cultural symbol of this city. And the families of the hutongs are also unforgettable.

Before you visit a country, knowing about the customs of the country is important and useful. Here are 4 customs you should know before traveling to Japan.
No. 4 is avoided at all cost.
In Japan, the number "four" is avoided because it sounds very similar to the word for death. No. 4 is very unlucky as No, 13 in Western culture. And it is used as little as possible. You must always avoid giving anyone something in fours because it can be seen as a very ominous(不吉利的)gt.No.49 is especially unlucky, as it sounds similar to the phrase that means "pain until death". The practice of avoiding No. 4 is called" Tetraphobia (四的禁忌)" and it is common in many East Asian and Southeast Asian regions .
People will sleep on the trains with their head on your shoulder.
If someone in Japan falls asleep with his or her head on your shoulder, it is common practice to just tolerate(容忍) it, because the place where most people work is far from their homes. After working long hours, many people will get very tired and often fall asleep on the train.
You must always bring a host a gift.
If you want to visit someone, you must always bring a gift. The gift should also be wrapped (包). You should also never refuse a gift if someone visits you.
Pouring your own glass is considered rude.
It is common in the US and many other countries in the world to serve others before you serve yourself, but in Japan you shouldn't pour yourself a drink. If you have poured for others, another guest will hope to see that your drink is empty and pour for you.

Three people were sitting around a table in a restaurant in Brazil. How much do you think each of them tipped (给小费)?

The Briton asked, “It’s common to tip 10 percent, right?”

The American man cried, “Oh, I was planning to leave 20 percent!”

The Chinese woman asked, “What’s a tip?”

Although it is not a tradition to tip in China, tipping is a big deal in the United States. There, it is common to tip about 15 to 20 percent of the bill.

Usually, people give tips to a waiter or waitress. The US tops the list of tipping—waiters and waitresses are expecting to get 15 to 20 percent of the bill. So if you order $ 100 in food, you are expected to pay your waiter at least 15, making your payment 115 in all.

Why is this? Many waiters and waitresses get very low wages. They get paid below the US minimum wage (最低工资), and tips make up for that. Some states pay their servers only $2.13 per hour.

It is not just for waiters, either. Hotel workers, hairdressers (发型师) and taxi drivers also expect tips.

Tipping is also popular in some Southeast Asian countries, like Indonesia and Thailand. However, in Japan, there is a no-tipping culture. If you try to give a waiter or waitress money, you may actually upset him or her.
