İ was an unlucky nurse who had to work on Christmas Day. It was always quiet in the emergency room (急诊室) on this day, so I was not expecting any patients. When I was complaining (抱怨) about working on the festival, five people showed up at my desk — a woman and four children. “Are you all sick?” I asked.

“Yes,” the woman answered weakly and lowered her head.

The children said they had earaches, but they couldn’t tell me which ear hurt. The mother told me she had a cough, but she seemed to be pretending (假装).

Something was wrong. I said nothing but explained that it might take a while before a doctor could meet them. “Take your time, please,” the mother said. I checked their charts (记录) — no address. Suddenly I knew, they were homeless and the hospital was warm.

I looked out at the family, huddling (挤在一起) together under the Christmas tree, smiling and talking with each other sweetly. Quietly, I went back to the nurses’ station and told them that we had a homeless family in the waiting room. It was just like God sending us a gift on Christmas Day. We took out our meals for our Christmas “patients”. We also put together oranges and apples as presents. We worked hard to exceed (超过) the needs of a family who only wanted a warm place on Christmas Day.

Later, when the family were leaving, the 4-year-old girl ran back and gave me a kiss. “Thanks for your kindness today,” she said to me quietly.
