Garbage sorting (垃圾分类) began on July 1, 2019. However, I live in my building with the other 238 families and we live with a similar system (系统) for years. Here, I’d like to talk about our experiences.
In October 2016, the government (政府) chose our neighborhood to be part of a pilot (试点的) program for garbage sorting. To help the program run successfully, we set up a volunteer team. I am one of the volunteers. However, several of us didn’t know if we could lead people in the building to change their habits.
We began with the usual ways. We handed out notices around the neighborhood. We also went door to door to tell people how to sort garbage. However, they made many mistakes. For example, many didn’t know wet rubbish meant food waste. Instead, they thought it meant rubbish that was wet. Some even refused to sort their garbage.
As a result, we volunteers had to do lots of sorting ourselves. At the same time, we went around explaining the rules. We kept talking to those people who refused to sort their garbage. We let them know we could help to sort garbage for them. It was a matter of time and patience. We believed they would finally change their mind.
Six months later, we were successful in changing people’s mind. People in my building began sorting their garbage. Some even joined us to help us.
I think face-to-face talks played an important role. Sometimes, these talks led to conflicts, but they were much more effective (有效的) than handing out notices. It was interesting to see what happened. I hope everyone knows garbage sorting is good for them.

Though seven years have passed, I still clearly remember the moment I was going to join the Red Cross.
It was the summer before I entered high school. I was volunteering at a blood drive. As I helped people at the canteen, I fell into a conversation with some of the donors (献血者). Some told me it was their first time; some said it was their fiftieth time. One elderly man talked about how his own near-death experience had encouraged him to start donating blood.
I left that blood drive with my mind swimming with stories. I had never before had such a meaningful volunteering experience. It was then that I seriously considered joining the Red Cross. I signed up with the Red Cross club at my school. Whether it was teaching CPR (心肺复苏) or organizing a Leadership Development Camp, every volunteering activity was meaningful.
In September 2017, my home, the Columbia River Gorge, was destroyed by forest fires. The air was heavy with smoke. Many families had to leave their homes. The Red Cross stepped up to offer their help. And within a few days, our school Red Cross club held its first meeting of the school year. During the meeting, we discussed different plans of action. Over the course of three weeks, we were able to raise thousands of dollars.
The Red Cross has enriched my life in countless ways. I am now excited to continue my journey as a lifetime Red Cross volunteer. I am ready to prevent suffering wherever I am needed.

On February 9th, 2013, Sarah Darling was walking along the street when she met a homeless man named Billy Ray Harris. She reached into her change purse(零钱包), took out all the coins she had and gave them to the homeless man. Neither of them realized that this small kind act would change their lives.
Sarah didn’t realize that she had given Billy not only all her change but also her ring that she had put in her change purse earlier until the following morning. She and her husband, Bill Krejci, rushed to see if they could find Billy. The homeless man was not only in the same place, but he also returned the ring at once. The couple was so thankful to him. They paid him back for his honesty by taking out their pockets of all the money they had.
Bill Krejci, a web designer, felt that he needed to do something more for this amazingly honest man. So on February 18th, he set up a special page to raise money for him. In just four days, Billy received over $85, 000 and there seems to be no end yet.
Now Billy isn’t living in the streets. Instead, he has a happy family. And that’s not all — thanks to the news report, he got together again with his elder brother, Edwin Harris, who he had been unable to find for 27 years.
