If you ask 10 students which subject he or she hates most, 9 of them will answer “Math”. No matter which country you visit, no matter which grade you are in, you may not learn Art, Biology, Chemistry or Chinese, but you always learn Math. Why do so many students hate Math and yet cannot avoid learning it at school?

Jenny Sanders, a high school student in California, asks “What good do we get from learning Math? We can use computers to calculate (计算) numbers and we can use computers to store information. I think learning Math at school is a waste of time.”

However, there is much more to Math than just learning to add and subtract numbers. In fact, Math is not so much about calculation because it is about learning to think logically (逻辑地) and working out problems. Of course, Jenny was right that we can use computers to do calculations, but if we can’t think logically, how could we know how to use the computer? In short, computers are only tools when solving problems.

For example, imagine you are a cook and must prepare dinner for 100 people. How should you divide your resources so that you can get the job done fastest and best? To think logically will help you work out your problems in a better way.

Well done, Javier. You are always active in speaking at school, and this is great. I always enjoy reading your writing, too. You have very good ideas. You can see from your report that reading is not a problem for you.

Sometimes you still make small grammar mistakes, and I think you can improve your vocabulary (词汇). I advise you to go over many important things that we learned this term. There is much language practice in your online workbook.

The area you need to work on the most is listening. I know this is difficult for you. I think you need more practice at home. Watch English TV shows and listen to tapes as much as possible. Have a nice holiday, and good luck for next term!

Why is history important? Well, a famous writer named Michael Crichton once said, “【小题1】 You are like a leaf that doesn’t know it is part of a tree.”

History isn’t just about names and dates from the past. It teaches us about the social development. History tells us about where we come from, what we did right and where we messed up. It’s also a guidebook to our present, and a compass pointing to our future. It gives us warnings for the future. 【小题2】

History isn’t only a study of other people. 【小题3】 The people we learn about may have lived even centuries ago, but their actions directly influence how we live our lives today. Events that seem like dates on a page have been turning points in the story of our societies.

【小题4】 We can ask friends from different countries about the best books about their nation’s history. We can also look into our own country’s past. We should remember stories that meant something to our country. This will give us different ideas on world history.

History helps us learn about different parts of the world and different times in history. The historical books about different nations are written by the people who know their histories well. Some of them are about our own nation, and some are about other nations in the world.

【小题5】 That’s the value of history.

A.It’s also about ourselves.
B.Then how can we learn history?
C.And it helps us move forward with knowledge.
D.If you don’t know history, you don’t know anything.
E.You can take a quick trip through the history of England.
F.All this helps us hold the key to understanding ourselves and the world.
