At Beijing’s 798 art zone (区), Italian artist Jacopo Della Ragione’s work named Conquista attracted many visitors. Born and raised in Florence, the art capital of Italy, Jacopo has showed a strong interest in art since his childhood.

Before coming to China, Jacopo knew almost nothing about China except Marco Polo’s adventure (冒险) to the land full of mystery in the 12th century. As he was strongly curious about China, Jacopo moved to Beijing in 2001. “I planned to spend two weeks to know about China, but later I found the time was far from enough, and I have stayed here for more than 20 years until now,” said Jacopo.

Jacopo first worked as an art and creative director for design and advertising companies, and media companies in China, and in 2018, he gave up the job and decided to become a full-time artist who mainly created abstract (抽象) paintings.

Ancient buildings, music, traditional art—everything in China can be the inspiration (灵感) of Jacopo’s art creation. The happiest moment for Jacopo is when some visitors who don’t understand modern art begin to show interest in it and realize art is part of their life after enjoying his artworks.

Having lived in China for more than twenty years, he said he was amazed by the country’s rapid development. Jacopo points out that he also sees a big hidden possibility in modern Chinese art, especially through the young Chinese artists who have done a great job in passing on the great traditional Chinese culture.

Besides art creation, Jacopo sometimes works as an exhibition (展览) leader, offering a platform (平台) to feel the charm of Italian culture. With his help, Chinese people get to learn more about Italian culture. At the same time, Jacopo spreads Chinese culture to Italy through his art. In 2024, he plans to make more dialogues between artists and cultural institutions (机构). Both Chinese and Italian people can enjoy each other’s works and start talking and understanding each other through them.

On a sunny Saturday morning, Mia was in her backyard with a bright smile. Today was perfect for trying out her latest creation—the Flower Watering Robot. She was exited to see if it could really water the garden by itself. She turned the robot on and watched as it started moving among the flowers. It was working!

Just then, a group of kids from her school walked by and saw her invention. Zoe, the tallest among them, stepped forward and turned the robot off.

“What is this?”she asked.

“It’s my Flower Watering Robot. It helps water plants by itself,” Mia explained.

The kids laughed, “Who needs a robot to water plants?” Zoe picked up the robot and set it aside rudely before they all walked away.

Mia felt sad as she picked up her robot. “Maybe Zoe is right…who would really use this?” she wondered, feeling discouraged.

Suddenly, she heard a voice. “Hey, are you okay?” It was Mr. Jackson, her neighbor. He noticed the robot and asked, “What’s this interesting thing?”

Mia brightened up a bit. “It’s my Flower Watering Robot. I built it myself to help with gardening...”

Mr. Jackson was amazed. “That’s amazing! You’re so creative. Don’t let those kids get you down. Keep inventing, and you’ll make something wonderful!”

“And guess what? I run a local science fair (展览会),” he continued. “I think your robot is great. I can see it winning a prize!”

Mia’s eyes lit up. The local science fair was a big deal, and the idea of her invention being part of it was exciting...

Imagine taking a flying taxi to the airport, or jumping over crowded city streets at rush hours, getting where you want to go far faster than you could in a car. Believe it or not, you might be able to do these things in an air taxi sooner than you think.

An air taxi is something like a helicopter (直升飞机) that can carry people from place to place. Air taxis don’t need a long runway (跑道) like planes do. They can go straight up and down.

In June, the government of America agreed to allow a company called Joby Aviation to start testing their new air taxi. This is the first time they’ve tested a taxi that has been built in a factory. Before that, all their taxis were made by hand.

By 2025, Joby hopes to start carrying passengers for money. They’ve worked together with Delta Air Lines to create a program to fly people from their homes to the airport. Joby’s air taxis will be flown by a pilot, and can carry four other passengers. They can go around 100 miles before the electric batteries need to be recharged (充电).

Compared with helicopters, Joby says their air taxis are both quieter and cheaper. The company expects to charge (要价) about $3 a mile at first. But over time, they hope to bring the price down to less than $1 a mile.

And as exciting as the idea of flying taxis is, some people have been anxious about them. The air taxis may be quieter than helicopters, but they’ll still be adding noise and traffic to our skies. Some people worry that only rich people will be able to afford to use them.

It seems likely that air taxis will be part of the future of travel. But there’s still a lot to do before air taxis become common.

Subject: Bonjour!
Bonjour! (That means hello in French.)
We hope you all had a great summer. Ours was a lot of fun. We have seen so many new things and met so many wonderful people. The French gave us a warm welcome and helped us get used to living here soon. We have so many things to share with all of you. We are going to send you more emails, but here are the best parts of our holiday in France so far.
We had a fantastic time seeing the Tour de France this summer. It is the most famous bicycle race in the world. The riders travel more than two thousand miles in about a month! We got a quick look at the riders as they sped past! After the race, our family rented bikes, and rode along part of the route that the cyclists used.
A few of you asked whether the French really eat snails(蜗牛). The answer is yes. We went out to dinner the other day, and our parents ordered some. We each tried one and it didn’t taste too bad. The snails, called escargots, are served with lots of butter. They feel a little rubbery when you bite into them, but they don’t really have much taste. Mum’s favourite food here is the French pastries. Dad loves the red wine. Our favourite is the fresh bread from the shop down the street.
We went to visit the Eiffel Tower a few weeks ago. We went all the way to the top. It was a sunny day, so we could see for miles and miles into the distance. Dad doesn’t like heights, so he stayed at the bottom of the tower and took pictures from the ground.
We miss all of you a lot. Write back to us and let us know what is new at home.
Au revoir! (Can you guess what that means in French?)
