Blood donation is a very important activity. It is an easy and direct way to contribute to social work and helps the community. For a good blood flow in your body, drink at least 6-7 glasses of water every day. Don’t take alcohol(酒) a day before and after giving blood. Do not smoke half an hour before giving blood.

When you are going for blood donation, be relaxed, which helps keep the right blood pressure. During the blood donation activity, take a deep breath and try to calm yourself. Don’t join in some other activities.

You need to take care of yourself after donating blood. Take a rest for 15 minutes after completion of the donation. It helps you to feel relaxed. Make sure that you have meals after donating blood. Smoking should be avoided for one hour after the process. Don’t join in some activities right away, for example, driving.

One evening, Anne was at home doing her homework. Matthew was home, but Marilla went to town with the Barrys and Mrs. Lynde. Suddenly, Anne looked up and saw Diana standing at the door. She looked very worried.

Minnie May was Diana’s three-year-old sister. She was very sick. Anne saw her and immediately (立即) went to work. She looked after many children before and knew what to do.

“First we must have lots of hot water. Put the fire on. I’m going to give her some medicine (药).” Minnie May did not like the medicine, but Anne did not give up. All night, Diana and Anne stayed with Minnie May. It was three o’clock when Matthew came with the doctor. But by then, Minnie May was sleeping. Anne told the doctor what she did. He was very impressed. Later on, he told Mr. and Mrs. Barry, “That little red-headed girl is very smart. She saved that baby’s life.”

The next day at dinner, Marilla had something important to tell Anne.

“Mrs. Barry was here this afternoon, Anne. She says thank you, and she is very sorry she acted as she did about the wine (酒).”

That night, Anne was invited to the Barry’s for a lovely dinner. They all said wonderful things about her, and she felt very special.

It was about 2:00 am. I was driving my taxi on the way to pick up a passenger. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark. I just saw a single light in a ground floor window, I walked to the door and knocked, “Just a minute,” answered a weak, elderly voice.

After a long silence, the door opened and a small woman in her eighties stood before me. She has a small suitcase beside her. I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help her. She took my arm and walked slowly toward the car. She kept thanking me for my kindness.

“It’s nothing,” I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.”

“Oh, you’re such a good young man.” She said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, “Could you drive through city center?”

“It’s not the shortest way.” I answered immediately.

“Oh, I’m familiar with the city. And I’m in no hurry.” she said. “I’m on my way to a hospice(临终医院). I don’t have any family left. The doctor says I don’t have very long. It would be the last time for me to travel around the city...”

I quietly reached over and shut off the meter(计价器). For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as a lift operator and the neighborhood where she had lived in. And she also told me to park in front of a furniture shop that once had been a ball room. She had gone dancing there as a girl.

Sometimes she’d ask me to slow down in front of a particular building. She just sat and stared into the darkness, saying nothing. At dawn(黎明), she suddenly said, “I’m tired. Let’s go now.”

We drove in silence to the address she had given me. “How much shall I pay you?” she asked, “Nothing.” I replied.

“You have to make a living,” she answered. “Oh, there are other passengers,” I said.

Almost without thinking, I gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly with tears. Our hug ended with her words, “ 6 ”
