The story of the English language goes back a really long time. Way back in history, different groups of people from far-off lands came to live in what is now England. They all had their own unique ways of speaking. As they started living together, their languages mixed and changed. There people created (创造) early English by blending (混合) languages.

As time passed, early English kept changing. Around a thousand years ago, the Vikings, who came from places like Denmark and Norway, invaded England. They brought new words and sounds that got mixed into the language, making it more interesting and colorful.

Then, in the year 1066, the Normans, who were from France, conquered (征服) England. They spoke differently from the people in England and brought many French words with them. These new words blended with English, adding more variety and richness to the language.

As people from England traveled to other lands, they took their language along. English spread across the world and became one of the most spoken languages.

Today, English is used by millions of people in many countries. It continues to change and grow. The history of the English language shows how different languages mixed together over many years. The journey of English is a fascinating tale of diversity (多样性), change, and adaptation (适应) through the ages.

My grandma can speak several languages well. It made me interested in language learning when I was a primary student. My grandma moved from Switzerland to England when she was young. As for me, although I can speak some Italian and German by listening to her, I only know a little grammar and sometimes get confused (困惑的). So it’s hard for me to understand how someone can speak several languages so well. I want to know how my grandma did it!

The Internet is a place where we can talk freely. But it is also a place where we pay little attention to whether or not our language competence (能力) is becoming poorer.

According to a recent survey by China Youth Daily, more than 76 percent of young people in China said they felt their Chinese language skills have declined (下降).

They don’t use complex rhetorical technique (修辞手法) as often as before anymore. It is believed that digital (数字的) technology and Internet memes (表情包) have changed their communication habits.

For example, direct expression is the preferred way to communicate online. When one sees something funny, one will simply type “hahaha” or use the “cry-laugh” emoji.

Also, “copy” culture is getting popular. People simply pick up expressions from the Internet without much thought. Many begin to use a fixed set of sentence patterns, such as “whenever you disagree with each other”.
