The kites in Weifang never disappoint. Every year the Weifang International Kite Festival amazes visitors with creative kites, as “paper birds” of varied designs keep appearing in the sky.

Kites in China can originate from the Warring States Period when Mozi made the first “wooden kite”. Kites didn’t actually become popular until the Ming Dynasty. By the middle of the Qing Dynasty, artists who were good at kite making began to appear in Weifang. In 1984, the first Weifang International Kite Festival was held.

Kites were used in China during the wars at the very beginning. For example, they can be used to record wind readings, similar to ship flags at sea. Over time, kites became connected with relaxing activities, and were often flown during festivals and holidays.

Today, kite-flying is a popular activity in China, and the Weifang International Kite Festival is one of the largest kite festivals in the world. In 2024, 622 kite artists from 59 countries and areas took part in the event. Zhang Xiaodong, 74, has attended all the festivals. In the early days, he only brought traditional kites to take part in the competitions, but this time, he used sound and light to make the story of Chang’e flying to the moon come “alive”.

The festival is a great platform to share kite-making skills. It also brings the people of China and other countries closer. As one citizen put it, “No matter how far away kite lovers go, there is always a ‘thread’ in their heart that can pull them together.”

①Jane’s friend Amy often hides her phone. When Jane is busy looking for it, Amy will always say, “You are too careless and forgetful.” Amy always tells Jane that the clothes Jane wears are ugly and not fit for her. When Jane is angry about her words, she will say, “I say that because I am your real friend.” If you have a friend like Amy, be careful! Maybe you’re experiencing the gaslighting (煤气灯效应).

②Gaslighting is a kind of mental abuse (精神虐待) where someone blames (指责) you for something they do, making you think you’re wrong, crazy or making you even question your memory and unable to trust yourself.

③To see if you meet the problem of gaslighting, you need to learn about some signs. The most typical one is that it can make you unsure of yourself. For example, you may find it difficult to make a simple decision.

④At the same time, you may often say sorry to the abuser and find excuses for his mistakes. Even worse, you will become lonely and feel sad, scared and hopeless.

⑤Since gaslighting is bad for mental health, it is important to deal with it at once. Scientists say the best thing you can do is to leave the person who gaslights you although it can be very hard. If you are not sure what to do, please talk to someone you trust, like a parent, a teacher, or a doctor. They can help you know what to do next and how to feel better.

Have you ever ridden a bike in the sun? It might make you feel a little hot. However, riding on a cycle path(骑行小路)in a sunny area could be fun. In the town of Krommenie, you can find a special cycle path that can create energy by using the sun.

This 70-meter-long cycle path was built with solar panels(太阳能板)into it. These panels take in light from the sun’s rays. Then they use the light to create electricity, which can power street lights. The electricity can also go straight into the electrical grid(电网)to offer electricity for daily use. In the first year, this short path was creating enough energy to power one house for a whole year!

This kind of path hasn’t been widely built because scientists are still doing research to test the safety of it. They must make sure the path is strong enough for cars, buses and even trucks to drive over it. They must also make sure the path isn’t too smooth because being too smooth could be a little dangerous. Bike riders may fall easily while riding on it.

In another town called Eindhoven, you can also find a cycle path which uses solar energy to make art. It’s about 1 kilometer long. The path opened in 2014. It is made up of thousands of tiny lights. The lights take in the sun during the day and shine bright at night like stars. These lights come together like a beautiful picture. Every year, many tourists visit it and take photos there.

It’s fantastic and creative to use the sun.
