Have you found that it’s hard to move your eyes of your phone? Do you feel left-out not being invited to a party? Do you think that others are having more fun, and living better lives than you? If the answer to any of these questions is “yes”, you may be suffering from (遭受) the Fear Of Missing Out, or “FOMO”. But, don’t worry. FOMO influences many people in the modern world. You are not alone.
FOMO has become a common social situation in recent years. The growth of mobile technology and social media is where FOMO comes in. New mobile technologies help us connect with anyone at all times. However, it is a double-edged sword (双刃剑). Today, most of social media are filled with photos and updates which only show the best part of others’ lives. That can leave us feeling that our own lives are imperfect.
So, what can we do to fight against FOMO? One idea is to cut down the time you spend on social media. Setting time limits (时限) for how long you read through or use social media each day will be helpful. Also. It’s a good way to just focus on what you have but not what you don’t. What’s more, keep a so-called gratitude journal (感恩日志), where you write down three things you are grateful for every day. “The UK could face serious water shortages (短缺) in the next 20 to 25 years,” James Bevan, head of the Environment Agency, said in March 2019. Britons have been worried about the problem in the past few months.
Two reasons lie behind the future water shortages. The first one is population growth. It is predicted that the population of the UK will have increased to 75 million by 2050. This will certainly cause stress on resources such as water and energy. On average, a person uses 150 liters (升) of water a day. Much of this is water wastage. It is common to see people leave the tap (水龙头) running while brushing their teeth. The other reason is climate change. The UK might get hotter and drier in the near future. This could reduce water supplies (供应) by 10 to 15 percent and then cause drought (干旱) across the country.
Charities said that we could all reduce our daily water usage to 100 liters every day. Suggestions include taking shorter showers and choosing a well-used flush toilet (抽水马桶). However, what a person can do is limited.
Perhaps many Britons have forgotten the days when water was scarce. “I remember the 1976 drought,” says Adrian Butler, a senior teacher at Imperial College London. “Many people, thankfully, have no idea of having to get your water from a standpipe (竖管) in the street. But once you’ve been through that, you will realize water is really valuable. It is something that we have a collective (集体的) responsibility for.” We can all take care to avoid wasting water.
