At the beginning of August, 2021, the Chinese government made new rules about online gaming for people under the age of 18. Under the rules, children can only play online games for one hour a night on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. On these nights, online gaming will only be available to the young people between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. What’s more, online gaming companies are responsible for making sure players use their real names and birth dates, and online games should not provide unsafe behaviors for students to imitate (模仿) like violence.

The new rules are trying to protect young people’s health of their body and mind. The government is hoping to stop young people from becoming addicted to online gaming. Both parents and teachers warmly welcome the new rules. They are glad that the government has taken action to help control children’s interest in online gaming.

Cao Jie, a teacher and a mother of a high school student in Changsha, was very happy when she heard about the news. She said online gaming is a waste of time and badly affects young students’ studies. While many schools don’t allow the use of phones in classrooms, lots of students choose to play video games at home, and their parents often find it difficult to prevent them from surfing online too long.

Rules about the time children spend online is the first step towards protecting them, but to better deal with the problem of Internet addiction, more efforts are needed from families, schools, the government and the whole society.
