(Marta is interviewing a volunteer, Haru, at the meeting. )
Marta: What kind of volunteer job do you have?
Haru: I work at a nature museum. I teach children’s groups about animals, birds and plants. Last month, I helped some students write a report about the birds they didn’t know.
Marta: That’s interesting. Where did you hear about this job?
Haru: I found it through United We Serve. It’s a great website for us to volunteer in our own communities. You can find it on www. serve. gov.
Marta: Is it just for young people?
Haru: No, it isn’t. There are chances for everyone!
Marta: I have an idea for a volunteer project. What should I do?
Haru: Before you start, you should put your idea on the site and ask for volunteers. Many people are volunteering these days. And more people are going to volunteer in the future. In America, there is a law in which student volunteers can get money for their education. Besides, the number of older people rockets. That means we are going to have more older volunteers, too.
Marta: Fine. What do you want to say to other young men?
Haru: ________
Marta: A good call! Hope more young people can join you! Thank you for your time, Haru.
Haru: My pleasure.

A few weeks ago, a friend from an unknown Smile Groups sent me $120 to do good things with. Since then I have used the money in the U.K. and U.S. It has helped families and strangers, and generally raised a lot of smiles. They have warmed my heart, but none so much as the gift I was able to give just an hour ago.
I was in a charity shop, looking at the second-hand books. It happened that the bookshelves were next to the toy shelf. I noticed a group of poorly dressed women standing behind me. As they looked through the clothes shelf, a little girl about three years old came over to the toy shelf. Immediately her attention was caught by a toy pram(手推车). She spoke to her mother and her mother asked the shop assistant how much it cost.   $3 was the answer.
The mum looked down at her child, perhaps thinking what she still had to buy and how much money she would have left. Then she shook her head. The child didn’t behave(表现)as badly as some might. Being told “no” was not new for her but she couldn’t keep the disappointment(失望)from her face.
I had a total of   $5 in my pocket. I touched the mother on the shoulder, put the money in her hand and said, “Buy her a doll too. ”
I didn’t wait to see the end. After all, it was not about being thanked. I walked out of the shop and into the sunshine.
The money the friend gave me was to help me find happiness of the world. Was there any better way, I wondered, to get so much happiness for so little money than to buy a little girl a toy pram and a doll to sit in it?

My brother and I were driving home together and started talking about something interesting. Without paying attention, my brother took a wrong turn.

Unfortunately, the wrong turn took us toward a bridge and, we had no way of turning back. My brother had to pay to cross. He was clearly frustrated by the mistake and the needless waste of 54.

As we drove forward, my brother noticed an old black Mustang (福特野马汽车) by the side of the road. A young guy was standing nearby trying to phone someone. I was busy trying to figure out which way we went next but my brother pulled over and asked the guy if he needed any help. And he did. He had a flat tire.

My brother helped him change the flat. We started getting to know the young man who was from a rough (粗糙的) neighborhood nearby. He said that this has been a bad week for him; earlier he had gotten into a minor (不严重的) ear accident, and now this flat on his way home from work. But he called us “a breath of fresh air” and kept thanking us because he really would have been suck if we hadn’t come along. After we had finished the job, he thanked us again and pulled out 520 to try to give it to us. “No,” I said. “We were never supposed to even get on that bridge. We took a wrong turn. But now we know why we did. It was to help you. Thank you for turning our mistake into an opportunity to serve.”

What I loved most was watching my brother throughout this process. He was able to turn his annoyance over the mistake into positive energy. He was able to see a chance to help (which I totally missed!) even in an otherwise negative situation, which can only come from a calm mind and an open heart. That was the bridge we were meant to cross.
