The British Museum is the biggest one in the world. It was built nearly 300 years ago by a doctor, Sir Hans Sloane. The man liked to collect things such as books, drawings, clothes and so on. He also hoped that his children and grandchildren kept his things well and so people would visit them after his death. His wish came true, and the museum opened in 1759, six years after Sir Hans Sloane died. Later, more antiques (古董) arrived at the museum and more people wanted to visit it.

The museum had a famous round Reading Room. There was something unusual in the room. Cool air came up through small holes in the tables. Hot air flowing under the floor kept readers’ feet warm. Since its opening, many famous people wrote and studied there.

It is open every day of the year, except two holidays (New Year’s Day and Christmas). Entrance (入场) is free. There are lots of special exhibitions and every day there are different films and talks, some of them for children. Small machines tell you about the museum as you walk around it.

So if you are one of the British Museum’s two million tourists this year, don’t try to see it all too quickly. There is a lifetime of looking in the British Museum.

As the weather gets warmer, there are few things that are better to do than travel. But traveling might not be that fun for everyone, especially for those who have motion sickness (晕动症).

Motion sickness is also called travel sickness. It is a common experience for many people. Depending on how you travel, it can be called carsickness or seasickness. People with motion sickness feel very uncomfortable while they are in motion. They feel sick and dizzy, like the room around them won’t stop spinning.

It is generally believed that motion sickness happens when your senses become confused (困惑的) with each other, Scientific American reported.

We use different parts of our body to sense movement. Our eyes tell us if we are moving. The inner ears (内耳) contain a special liquid that helps us sense our direction and balance. Our muscles react to movement.

When you move around, these body parts work well together. But when you are in a car or an airplane, they get confused. Your inner ear signals that you’re moving, but your eyes say you’re sitting still because you can’t see that you’re moving. This mismatch gives us motion sickness.

But some people are less sensitive to motion sickness. This may be because they have certain genes (基因) that prevent mismatching senses, Bethann Hromatka, a genetics expert from the US, told the Atlantic.

Although there are many ways to deal with motion sickness, scientists believe that the key is to simply try to adapt to it. For example, some astronauts do special exercises that give them mild motion sickness. After a week or two, the astronauts become used to it and don’t feel uncomfortable anymore, Sam Puma, a NASA flight doctor, told the BBC.

Jane, a reporter, is collecting information for the local newspaper. She is interested in the following things introduced in a magazine.

Smart Schoolbag

Forget to pack the books you need into your schoolbag in the morning rush?

A schoolboy aged 11 has invented a schoolbag. It tells you which books to pack. A small computer and a scanner (扫描装置) are fixed in the bag. As each book is put into the bag, it is checked by the scanner. If any book is missing, a message will be shown on the computer screen to remind you.

Weather Sweets

Can you eat weather?

A university makes that happen. It uses a 3D printer to create sweets based on the weather information of a certain day.

The shapes of the sweets are affected by wind speed. The colors of the sweets are decided by temperature. The sweets act as a weather record of the day when they are made.

Sunrise Bed

It’s hard for you to get up in the morning, isn’t it?

To help you get up, a company has created a “tool”—a sunrise bed.

It wakes you up gently as a sunrise does. Lights built into the bed turn on and start to get brighter and brighter. When the lights are fully on, soft music will begin to play. It will be louder and louder until you turn it off. The company explains, “The gentle light tells your body that it is morning, so it stops producing a chemical that helps you sleep.”
