It is reported that the UK will save thousands of red phone boxes. Its first phone box started appearing in 1921, and the special red style came out five years later.

As smart phones have become part of everyday life, the public (公共的) phone boxes may seem out of date. But Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator (通信商), says they can still be a “lifeline” for people in need.

“People can use the phone boxes we plan to protect to make calls. If one of those calls is from a sad child, an accident victim (受害者), that phone line can be a lifeline at a time of great need,” says Selina Chadha, a leader in Ofcom.

Ofcom plans to protect 5,000 phone boxes, especially in poor areas where smart phones are not so common. “We also want to make sure that people in those areas, often in poor areas, can still make calls,” she adds.

According to the official report (官方报道), nearly half of the phone boxes in the UK have lost their places in people’s everyday life. Because more and more people use smart phones. It is said that people turned more than 6, 500 unused call boxes into mini community libraries or coffee shops under a plan called “Adopt a Kiosk”. It allows local organizations (当地组织) to buy a red phone for only one pound and turn the box into something useful.

In big cities, there are many migrant workers(外来务工人员) dreaming about a better life, and as a result, they have to leave their children behind.

According to a survey, there are now about 61 million left-behind children(留守儿童) in poor areas. This has brought many problems. These children care little about others. They do not do well at school. Luckily, many Chinese are now thinking about the life of the left-behind children and actions have been taken to help solve the problem.

A charity event took place in Beijing last month. Its aim was to raise social awareness(意识) of left-behind children. The event was held to raise money from businesses and the public to prepare “love bags”. Inside the bags, these are things for children, including books, and envelopes (信封) and stamps so that children can write to their parents.

The event was started by Chen Weihong, a television host in China. “The left-behind children don’t have enough parental love and family care. They need to be in touch with their parents. We hope our love bags will help them communicate with their parents, and make them happier,” he said.

The Chinese saying goes: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. This is what the Seattle-based Fare Start does. Not only does the charity provide meals for the homeless but it also teaches them cooking skills that prepare them for jobs in food service.

In Seattle, 13.2% of people live below the poverty (贫穷) line since its beginning in 1999. Fare Start has grown, graduating 100 people from its adult cooking training program in 2013, 90% of whom went on to well-paid job within 90 days of graduation. 88% of those people still held their positions six months later.

At Fare Start, students begin their training with simple tasks like reading recipes (菜谱) and planning menus. Many also receive housing. In return, they are required to work. Starting with helping in the kitchen preparing meals for people, the trainees (实习生) move their way up the ranks, ending up in the kitchen of the Fare Start restaurant in downtown Seattle.

The practical skill-training and other support services allow successful graduates like Jayna. She lost her job as a nurse due to alcohol abuse. Since graduating from Fare Start, she has worked in a small house at Yellow stone National Park. She said, "I could not have put myself back together again. Fare Start did that for me."

Kevin is another success story. He found that having to show up at the same place every day kept him on track. Upon leaving Fare Start, Kevin began setting goals for his future and seeing them through—including holding down his job for almost a year.

Going forward, Fare Start plans to shift more focus to women especially women with children.
