Being a place where you can’t speak the local language can be difficult for you to live. Is it possible for us to take a dictionary all the time? Of course, no! It’s only natural to communicate through body language. Hands can show something easily, but their meanings are different in different places.
Trying to call someone to come to you can not be understood easily. Because it depends on where you are. The same gesture may mean very different things in different places. Westerners do it with a hooked (弯曲的) forefinger and a raised palm (手掌). Asians do it in an opposite way and they don’t like the westerner’s way to ask for coming. In their opinion, they often do this to call the dog. Instead, when calling someone to come, Asians turn the palm down and wave all fingers together, and this is how Western people tell someone to go away.
Even the simplest hand movement can cause cross-cultural problems. In the West, a thumb up has a good meaning and a thumb down a bad one. However, you might be surprised to know that in the Middle East, a thumb up has a negative meaning and a thumb down has no meaning at all.
Body language may be a natural and good choice when you can’t communicate in local language. Some simple movements, gestures or even a blink of your eye may work just fine. Even if you don’t understand the words at all, it is still funny and useful to try body language.

Body language is an important part of communication(交流). If you want to communicate well, it’s important to understand how you can (and can’t) use your body to say what you mean, especially when you’re in a foreign country. If a person is bored, he won’t look at the person who is talking to him. He will find other things to do. He may also keep looking at his watch or a clock. If a person is open to you, his arms and legs will not be crossed (交叉的). And if a person is relaxed, you will know it by looking at his body, even his breathing(呼吸) is slower.
Here are some examples of body language:
Body language | Feeling |
Sitting with legs crossed | Bored |
Sitting with legs apart (分离的) | Open, relaxed |
Walking with hands in pockets, head down | Sad |

When you touch your dog slowly, it wags (摇) its tail (尾巴). That is its way of saying that it loves you. And, if you watch it carefully, you will see that it uses its tail to say so many things to you. Every movement of the tail means a different thing. If the dog is wagging its tail, it means that it is friendly to you; if its tail is straight, it means that it is getting ready to fight; and if its tail is behind its legs, it means that it is giving up the fight.
Unlike dogs, cats’ tail language is not so meaningful. When a cat feels scared or meet some dangerous things, it tries to appear bigger than usual and its tail shakes with a big movement. And when it doesn’t like something, it moves its tail quickly.
The tail language of dogs and cats has an interesting story behind it. Earlier, dogs and cats were predators. They used to catch other animals as their food. When dogs went out catching other animals with their friends, tail language became useful. When they were close to each other, dogs could use some special ways like facial expressions (面部表情) to talk. But for long-distance talks, they used their tails. Unlike dogs, cats liked to catch other animals alone, so they didn’t need to use tail language too often. So cats’ words in tail language are much fewer than those of dogs.
