For many animals, the sea is now a scary place. Overfishing and pollution are killing many sea animals. But the number of cephalopods (头足类动物)—sea animals that include octopus and squid (鱿鱼)—has been growing for the past 60 years, reported Time for Kids.

Zoe Doubleday is a scientist at the University of Adelaid e in Australia. She did a study of cephalopods. She said cephalopods’ special abilities made it possible for their numbers to grow.

These animals can change their color and body shape. They are fast-growing and live for only one or two years. “This allows them to get used to changing environments more quickly than other sea animals,” Doubleday told Time for Kids.

What’s more, rising sea temperatures might make animals age faster, she said. They might be growing faster and giving birth to more babies. Cephalopods live in all of the world’s seas. People can find them both in cold and hot places. Because they can easily get used to their environment, the animals get the name: “weeds (野草) of the sea”.

Will octopuses and squid take over the world one day? According to Doubleday, that won’t really happen. The growth of cephalopods could slow down if the animals run out of food and start eating each other. Overfishing could also affect their numbers.

For now, the cephalopod growth is good news for them and some other sea animals. “The growing number of cephalopods could be good for sea animals and birds that eat cephalopods,” Doubleday said.

A special pet-care center in Shenzhen has been highly praised by people. It is China’s first pet-care center to take care of pets while their masters are in quarantine(隔离)because of COVID-19.

Because of COVID-19’s Omicron variants(奥密克戎变), many people have been taken into quarantine, leaving their pets at home alone. Such a small pet-care center in fact is a big step for love, which shows the city’s care for people’s needs during pandemic(疫情). It’s common that most pet owners see their pets as members of their family. Besides, pets are also people’s private things. So, taking good care of pets will show the government’s respect both to life and private things of people.

Shenzhen has set a good example. Some pets even received certificates(证书)of “Little heroes against COVID-19”. One of these certificates was awarded to Fu Zai, a British short-hair cat. He spent about 20 days at this special pet-care center. The certificate said: “Dear Fu Zai, in view of your excellent performance at the pet center, doing pretty well in eating, walking and other tasks, and successfully fighting against the pandemic, we have decided to award you the title Anti-pandemic Little Hero. This certificate is for you and we hope that you will grow up healthy and happy!”

The high praise on the small pet center in Shenzhen shows people’s strong wish to have their pets well cared when they are in quarantine and this wish exactly should be paid attention to by government. Although the care center can only take care less than 300 pets, it’s undoubtedly a good start.

①People who have dogs love to talk about dogs. If you have a dog or if you are friends with a dog owner, you are probably heard many interesting facts and stories about these four-leggged friends of ours. You may have heard someone say that dogs are color-blind. But is this true? Do you know anything about this fact?

②________ Just like us, dogs have retinas (视网膜). The retina is an important light-sensing structure. Dogs also have cone cells (视锥细胞) and rod cells (视杆细胞) in their retinas. The cone cells allow dogs to perceive (感知) color and see things in detail, while the rod cells help them see things in the dark and notice movement.

③Most humans have three kinds of con e cells: blue, red and green. They allow us to tell the difference between different colors. But dogs have only two kinds of con e cells. One kind is blue, and the other lies somewhere between red and green. Therefore dogs are unable to tell orange, red and green. They can only see things in yellow, blue, grey, brown, white and black. In other words, the vision (视力) of dogs is similar to that of a red-green color-blind man. Although they have fewer kinds of cone cells, dogs have more rod cells than humans. This allows them to see more clearly in the dark and notice movement more exactly than us. While a camper is spending a night outdoors with his dog, for example, the dog may suddenly stand up and stare into the darkness. This can be a little worrying for campers who are alone. The dog, however, may have simply seen a small mouse moving across the grass in the distance that we might never be able to see.

④The next time someone mentions that dogs are color-blind, you can remind them, “They’re red-green color-blind, to be exact.” While it may be true that our lovely animal friends see fewer colors, they can still see better than us in many other ways!
