Slow-moving Qigong has been the old people’s favorite sport, but in the past several years it has become popular among Chinese young people. Short videos of young Chinese doing traditional fitness Qigong have come into video websites in large numbers, among which a video of Baduanjin has been played for more than 10 million times and received over 6,000 comments on Bilibili.
Baduanjin is one of the oldest fitness methods to stay healthy in China, which was first created over 800 years ago during the Song Dynasty. The name mentions that how the eight movements provide a soft quality for the movement of the body.
Compared with other sports such as ball games or swimming, Baduanjin is slow and usually played to restful music, so it used to be considered as the sport for the elders. However, it’s perfect for office workers, as they often suffer from back and neck pain which is caused by sitting in front of computers for hours. And it doesn’t require much space, equipment or time.

Instead of spending your spare time at work in the hope of making more money, maybe you should go to the sports center. That’s because it could make you happy just like the money you made during this time. An interesting new study in The Lancet found that people who enjoy doing exercise have a greater sense of happiness than those who don’t.
Researchers from Oxford and Yale Universities used data collected from more than 1.2 million Americans. They were asked, “How many times have you felt uncomfortable because of mental (心理的) problems in the past 30 days?” They were also asked about their exercise habits and were allowed to choose from 75 kinds of activities, including doing housework and childcare, running, weightlifting and cycling.
The researchers found that people who always exercise feel bad for about 35 days every year while the people doing little exercise feel bad for an additional (额外的) 18 days. From the study, people who exercised had 43 percent fewer days of poor mental health in the past month than people who did not exercise. All kinds of exercise can lead to a lower mental health burden (负担).
Social activities for exercising like team sports had an even more positive influence, although cycling was the most popular. Perhaps that’s because it takes place outdoors, which is always a way for people to break away from stress.
It is possible to get too much exercise. The right amount (量) seems to be three to five times per week, lasting 30 to 60 minutes each. The key point should be that any amount helps, so don’t force yourself to hit that perfect balance.
