There was a farmer who planted fields of wheat (麦子). He cared for the wheat and made sure that it received enough water and sun, because he lived on it.
One morning, the farmer awoke because of the sound of birds in his field. He ran outside and saw his wheat field covered with birds. He began waving (挥动) his arms and making loud sounds. He hoped this would scare the birds away. His plan worked. The birds flew away in hurry, and the farmer went back to do his work.
Early the next morning, the farmer was awakened to the sound of birds. He followed the same way and scared the birds by making sounds. It worked again. The birds flew away and left his wheat alone.
The birds began to realize that they were not in any real danger. They found the farmer just walked around waving at them and making sounds, so they got braver and braver.
On the third morning, the farmer heard the birds again and realized that he needed to be more serious. He kept his dog on a lead. The birds didn’t even move. They knew he would just scare them. So they weren’t too worried. The farmer let go of the dog and the dog went to chase (追赶) the birds. This made the birds fly away, never to be seen again.
At last, the farmer understood that if one stuck to the old rules: he wouldn’t make any progress.
