Spring is here, and it is time to enjoy West Lake Longjing tea. Usually, we think of workers picking tea leaves by hand. But now some Longjing tea is being picked by metal workers—tea-picking robots!

In a Hangzhou tea garden, a smart tea-picking robot developed by Zhejiang Soi-Tech University sell to work for the first time. “We took thousands of pictures of new tea buds (芽) and fed them to the robot for it to learn. The robot uses an AI model to recognize the buds it needs to pick,” said Professor Chen Jianneng, Party branch secretary (党支部书记) of the research team. This lets the robot find about 90 percent of the right tea buds.

The robot’s arm pulls and then sucks (吸) up the tea buds. These buds are quickly moved ínto a special box. After the robot gathers all the buds from the area it’s working at, it moves the buds from the box to a main box that holds everything it collects.

The robot was made because there are not enough people to pick tea. In Zhejiang, about 400,000 more pickers are needed now. “Picking is the biggest challenge for the development of the tea industry,” said Professor Wu Chuanyu , who leads the research team. “Tea-picking robots are a trend (趋势) of the future,” said Wu. “In about five years, the robots will do the job of picking West Lake Longjing tea instead of people,” Wu added.

The AI (人工智能) has changed our lives. There are four useful AI inventions here.

Jiuge

The Al can remember 300,000 Chinese poems clearly. What’s more, it can write a poem in a very short time. In a CCTV show, Jiuge beat three great poem fans from a famous college. It will flash(闪) two white lights side to side to show thanks to the bus.

Forpheus

The ping-pong robot can play in an easy way with a beginner and a difficult way with a better player. What’s more, it not only encourages players with words like “Good job!”, but also gives some good advice to improve their skills.

Self-driving AI

It can drive the car more safely than humans. It doesn’t drink wine and never feels tired. It can do what we humans do. For example, if a car with this AI has passed a bus, it will flash two white lights side to side to show thanks to the bus.

Facial Recognition(人脸识别)

It is used a lot in the world such as ACS. ACS won’t let a stranger in without the house owner’s permission(允许). Paying by facial recognition is common now. The police in Hangzhou even caught a criminal(罪犯) at a concert with its help.

【小题2】What will Forpheus do while playing?
A.It will guess what job the player is.
B.It will be angry if the player is a beginner.
C.It will say “What a shame!” to the player.
D.It will change its way of playing according to different players.
【小题3】When does the Self-driving AI car flash two white lights side to side?

The brush pen, one of the “Four Treasures of the Study”, was invented thousands of years ago. However, the oldest pen was just a piece of bamboo or a stick. It was difficult for people to write well on thin silk.

It is said that Meng Tian, a general of the Kingdom(王国)Qin, improved the pen. When Meng was leading an army to fight against the Kingdom of Chu, he had to report the situation to his king in time. But his pen was too hard and caused him much trouble, so he was thinking of ways to improve it.

One day Meng made his way home with some wild rabbits on the horse back. Fat and heavy, one rabbit’s tail left a long trail(痕迹)on the ground when they moved on. Suddenly a good idea came to his mind when he saw it, “If I tie the rabbit’s hair to a stick, would it be easy to write with?”

On arriving home, he tied the rabbit’s hair to a stick and tried writing with it. But the rabbit’s hair was too smooth to write well and wasted a lot of silk. So he threw away his “invention” into a stone hole in the yard.

However, Meng never gave up and kept trying all the time. A few rainy days later, he happened to find his “invention” fatter in a stone hole. He picked it up with hope. The brush worked beautifully on silk. Meng succeeded at last.

【小题1】Why did Meng Tian want to improve the pen?
A.Because the king asked him to do so.
B.Because he didn’t like the rabbit’s hair.
C.Because the old pen made him much trouble.
D.Because he had to fight against the Kingdom of Chu.
【小题2】When did Meng think of the good idea in Paragraph 3?

【小题3】Which is the right order of improving the brush pen?

Smartphones are getting boring. The new models are either a bit faster or have nicer cameras, but they are basically no different from the ones already in our pockets. This is why scientists are hoping, and working for something new, something that will change our lives just as greatly as smartphones do. At the moment, the next invention might be smart glasses.

Just imagine. Instead of having to pick up your phone and look at the screen, all of the information you need simply appears just in front of you, in your glasses. Satellite navigation directions would appear right there on the road. And your smart glasses could guide you to the right shelf in the supermarket!

Smart glasses could also be used in industry. They could show engineers the instructions they need to fix things more quickly. A doctor could carry out a huge operation, guided in real time by someone on the other side of the world.

This may not happen. But most of the technologies to invent them are already there. For example, one key technology is called AR, which can make digital 3D objects appear as if they are part of the real world. We’ve used it a lot on our video call. Similarly, huge progress has been made in spatial audio(空间音频). This is when a sound is made to give it a sense of place, like what you hear in an empty room. Some high-end earphones can already do that. Future glasses will of course need to recognize your voice to do tasks. This technology has been widely used in our daily life.

So, why aren’t we all wearing smart glasses yet? So far, no one has invented a good way to send images(影像)of our world onto glasses. However, with the rapid development of technology, smart glasses could arrive much sooner than we think.

【小题1】According to the passage, what might be the new invention that will change our life?

【小题2】What are Paragraphs 2 and 3 mainly about?
A.Where smart glasses could be used.B.When smart glasses might be made.
C.Why smart glasses should be changed.D.How smart glasses would give directions.
【小题3】What do the underlined words “Satellite navigation” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.VIP.B.DIY.C.GPS.D.UFO.
【小题4】How might the writer feel about the future of smart glasses?
A.Bored.B.Uncertain.C.Satisfied.D.Confident.
【小题5】Which can be the best title for the passage?
A.Different Ways to Use Smartphones
B.Smart Glasses will be Used in Industry.
C.Smart Glasses will Greatly Change our Lives.
D.Why can’t We Wear Smart Glasses at Present?
