Gui comes from Yunnan. Now in his 30s, Gui works as a teacher at Beihang University. He believes “Knowledge can change your life.” and “Nothing is impossible.”
“He likes reading very much,” said Gui Haiyi, Gui Haichao’s younger brother. “He reads books every day. He sets a good example for us.”
Yang Hongzhu is Gui’s high school teacher. He said, “Gui could make good use of time. He was the first one to come to the classroom every morning. Then he sat at his desk and began to read. He liked asking teachers and classmates questions in the school in the day time. After school, he would study late into the night.” He studied very hard, so his classmates’ parents liked calling him “the boy next door”.
“As students, we should have our own dreams and study hard to make them come true.” Gui kept this in mind and encouraged himself and his classmates to do so when he was in the high school and the university.

The Shanghai Free-Trade Zone published a list of talented people who will qualify for (有资格) a Shanghai hukou. Yang Chaoyue, a young idol, has qualified for it, which has brought a lot of heat online. Here are some opinions from netizens.
Wendy: There is a Chinese saying that goes, “Do not ask where a hero comes from.” Yang has become a well-known person in China. Like many, young people making every effort to buy a house in Shanghai, she also works hard. It is her persistent (坚持不懈的) spirit that makes her a success.
Curry: Yang can be treated as a role model for young people. Going from a village girl to a successful star, she made it through her own efforts. Shanghai government has many channels for all kinds of talented people to be accepted.
Walter: It’s too difficult to win the competition for being a permanent resident (永久居民) of Shanghai. People work hard from primary school to university, but still fail. Yang started to work when she was in middle school, but easily became qualified because she is a popular idol. It’s unfair to others. Yang might give the false information that school isn’t important.
Zoe: Talented people with special skills can make great contributions in lots of different fields. However, Yang left school and started to work at an early age. Although she has worked hard, she doesn’t make much of a difference to society. She might give Chinese teens the idea that knowledge is useless when you’re an online pop star.
