Chinese chopsticks are a pair of sticks to be used when eating. They were first used in China and then introduced to other areas in the world. Chopsticks are considered one of the symbols of Chinese food culture.

When were chopsticks invented? In fact, before the invention of chopsticks, Chinese ancestors actually used hands to eat. Chinese people started to use chopsticks about 3,000 years ago during the Shang Dynasty. During the pre-Qin period, chopsticks were called “Jia”, and in the Qin and Han Dynasties, they were called “Zhu”. Because “Zhu” shares the same pronunciation with “stop” in Chinese, which is an unlucky word, by the Ming Dynasty people began to call them “Kuai”, meaning “fast” in Chinese. This is the origin of today’s name of Chinese chopsticks.

Who invented chopsticks? There is no exact historical record about the question, but there are many folk stories about it. One story is that Jiang Ziya was inspired to create chopsticks by a mythical (神话中的) bird. Another one is that Daji, the favorite wife of the King Zhou of Shang, invented chopsticks in order to please the king. It is also said that Yu the Great, who founded the Xia Dynasty used sticks to pick up hot food in order to save time to control flood.

What should we pay attention to when using chopsticks? When eating with the elders, Chinese people usually let the elders take up chopsticks before anyone else. Besides, playing with chopsticks is thought to be a bad manner. It’s also impolite to tap chopsticks on one’s bowl, because in ancient China beggars (乞丐) often did it to draw attention.

People know and drink Coca-Cola all over the world. Hundreds of millions of people can know a Coke bottle by its shape and the famous Coca-Cola logo (商标) is also the most famous logo in the world with a history of 100 years.

But the story of Coca-Cola is even older than that. It was in 1886 that John Pemberton, a druggist in America, invented a new type of sweet liquid (液体), using coca leaves, sugar and cola nuts, plus a few other secret ingredients! Pemberton sold it as a medicine. And with its coca, he thought it must have made people feel good! However, Pemberton’s medicine was not very successful, so he sold his secret formula (配方) to another druggist, Asa Candler. Candler was interested in it because he thought that Pemberton’s “medicine” would be much better if being mixed with soda.

Candler was the man who really invented the drink Coca-Cola. At first he sold it in his drugstore. Then he began selling it to other drugstores, who used it with their soda fountains. Candler also advertised his new drink, and soon people love it. Before long some businessmen expected to sell it in bottles. Then the famous bottle was designed in 1916.

During the First World War, American soldiers in Europe began asking for Coca-Cola, so the company began to export (出口) to Europe. Today, it is made in countries all over the world and is the world’s most popular drink.
