Maple trees are the most famous trees in Canada. Their leaves look like little red palms. You can see a maple leaf on Canada’s national flag. In March and April, maple trees shed (流淌) “tears”. They are as sweet as honey.
The sweet “tears” are sap (汁液). On cold days, the sap is frozen. When spring comes, it starts running. The native Americans were the first people to find sap. In an old story, the chief of a tribe (部落首领) threw his axe at a maple tree. The sap ran into a bucket under the tree. The next day, the chief’s daughter used the bucket to cook food. She found that the food was sweet and tasty. It was because of the sap!
People use these “tears” to make maple syrup (糖浆). The Maple Syrup Festival is a traditional festival in Canada. It usually lasts from the end of March to early April each year. Traditional Maple Syrup Festival is open to visitors from home and abroad, especially for children.
People boil the sap to make it sticky and sweeter. At the festival, you can enjoy lots of snacks made out of sap. For example, maple taffy is popular among kids. A candy maker pours hot maple syrup onto clean snow. Wait a few seconds for it to freeze. Tada! The taffy is ready!

Virus-detecting masks
Scientists are working on a mask that can test COVID-19 in the air. If there are viruses(病毒), the mask will change color.

What do you want to be when you grow up? Would you rather be a scientist or an artist? If you have sisters and brothers, the order in which you were born may answer the question for you.
A group of British scientists studied 500 people from 11 different job groups. They found that older children are more likely to become astronauts(宇航员)and scientists. NASA astronaut Neil Armstrong and British scientist Stephen Hawking are both the oldest children in their families.
The scientists also found that middle children are 30 percent more likely to become CEOs than their brothers and sisters. Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook and Bill Gates are both middle children.
Younger children are likely to be the “softest”. They get attention by learning to pay attention to other people’s thoughts. This makes them understand others’ feelings easily. So, younger children are more likely to become musicians. German musicians Bach and Mozart were both the youngest children in their families.
The study results also suggested that the only child in a family is more likely to become an artist. They get full attention from their parents and are free to develop themselves. This makes them more creative and confident.
