Zhang Guimei, the principal of Huaping High School for Girls, has been given the title “Role Model of the Times” for helping girls from poor families. Here is the moving story of Ms. Zhang.

Zhang moved to Lijiang at the age of 17 to teach in the middle school in Huaping County. Once, she got badly ill but had no money for the treatment (治疗). With the help of the people there, she was able to get the treatment.“From then on, I told myself that I must do something for those people who helped me”, Zhang said.

Slowly, a dream of setting up a free high school for girls in Huaping County appeared in Zhang’s heart. From the year of 2002, she began a six-year journey to look for funds (资金). In 2008, Zhang finally set up Huaping High School for Girls at the foot of the Shizi Mountain in Huaping. The school was the first high school in the country to provide free education for girls who have been unable to continue their studies after completing their nine years of education.

Thanks to her efforts, more than 1,800 girls from poor families have entered universities through her education until now. Zhang has been helping to improve the area as a whole. Influenced by her, many of her students have chosen to teach in poor areas. Now, with Zhang having got the honorary title, the education for girls from poor areas will receive more attention.

In the Spring Festival Gala in 2021, Wang Yuan’s song Listen to Me passed happiness to everyone. “It doesn’t matter who I am,” he said in an interview, “My duty is to spread happiness and joy from the stage.” As a young artist, he has over 81 million followers on Sina Weibo. He not only spreads joy but love and responsibility. He sees it as his duty to lead the followers to do something good.

Wang Yuan was named a UNICEF (联合国儿童基金会) Special Advocate for Education in June 2017, followed by a more important role one year later-the organization’s ambassador (大使). Then, he has worked to improve high quality education for every young person worldwide. In his eyes, education is a public good, not a handout.

He also plays a leading role in his own social good project. Under his influence, people pay more attention to public good and have done a lot to help those in need.

Just like TV host and singer Yang Yang once said, “Wang Yuan takes responsibility as a teen idol (偶像). He leads people into doing a lot of meaningful things. I believe that this love and responsibility will be passed on to more people under his call.”

We’re glad that Wang Yuan is a reflection of Chinese celebrities (名人). They are using their star power to call on fans and members of the public to help the needy.

You can seldom see homeless people on the street. So what could you do if you want to help them? Here are some ways.

Donate (捐赠) money. The easiest way to help the homeless is to donate your money. When you want to do that, you can donate your money to local organizations. Most charity organizations know where the most help is needed.

Donate things. Donate your used or new things is another easy way to help. Donate these things to local organizations which help the homeless or give them to homeless people you see often. The best things to donate like: professional clothing, new socks…

Provide food. There are lots of ways that you can help homeless people get food. You can donate fresh fruits and vegetables to local soup kitchens. You can also drop off bananas, apples, or sandwiches.   

Call emergency (紧急) services. If you see someone who may be a danger to themselves or others, call emergency services. If someone is clearly having a serious problem, call for help also. If someone is in danger because of weather conditions, call Emergency Services also.
