Gin is an alcoholic (含酒精的) drink. It gets its taste mainly from fruits and flowers. Indlovu Gin comes from South Africa. It is made using elephant dung (粪).
Les and Paula Ansley make Indlovu. Indlovu means “elephant” in the Zulu language. They came up with the idea a couple of years ago. They went on safari (游猎) to see African animals. On safari, they learned that elephants eat many fruits and flowers. But they digest less than 33% of their food. The rest comes out in their dung. “Because of that, elephant dung has a great mix of plants and flowers,” Les said.
Weeks after their trip, Paula, a gin lover, had a strange idea in the middle of the night. “Why don’t we let others do the hard work of collecting?” she said to her husband. “And we will make gin from it.”
The couple tried to get some dung from the park where they went on safari. It was sent in the mail. Now they collect the dung themselves, using their hands. The dung is dried and washed. Next, the Ansleys use a process to kill germs (细菌). It is then dried again and soaked (浸泡) in gin.
“The gin tastes good,” the Ansleys said. They mark the bottles with the date and place where the dung was collected. They said the taste changes with the place and season.
At first, people didn’t want to taste the gin. But now the drink is popular with tourists who want to bring home a strange gift. The gin is sold at hunting camps, airports and online.

Here are four young people from different countries along Belt and Road Routes (一带一路).They are talking about how the new things change (改变) their lives.
Justin :I'm from Romania .China is really a great country and its high-speed trains are very fast, tidy and easy to take .It takes me only about 6 hours from Beijing to Shanghai by train .It saves a lot of time and it's cheaper than the plane .I wish we would have high-speed trains in our country someday.
Archana :My life in Beijing is very different from that in India .Here in China ,I don't take money
with me when I go out .I can pay for almost everything by Zhi Fu Bao .Oh ,it's great .But in India ,if you don't take money with you ,you'll be in a tough spot.
Yala :I'm from Nepal .I always go out by bike .With the Bike-sharing system ,people can borrow a bike from point " A" and return it at point " B".It's not only cheap but also a green and healthy way of life .like it very much.
Bond :You can find many great things that we don't have in Thailand .We don't have Alipay or other online payment Apps .In China ,I can go shopping when I stay inside the house .I wish I could bring them back to my country !

Video glasses make people look cool in movies. Now, thanks to scientists, our life could be even cooler. Professor Babak Parviz of the University of Washington in the US and his team have created a kind of electronic contact lens (隐形眼镜), which could allow you to watch TV and see electronic documents and e-mails directly on your eye.
The new lens can be put onto your eye and taken away just like a common contact lens. It has several parts, including an LED light, an electronic circuit (电路) and an antenna (天线) that picks up power and information.
In order not to influence people’s normal field of vision (视野), the researchers have kept all the parts particularly small. Some parts are thousands of times thinner than a human hair.
Besides its size, another challenge the researchers face is that the human eye can only focus on (聚焦) things a few centimeters (cm) away. Anything too close to our eyes will become blurry. People can’t see the things near us clearly. To solve this problem, Parviz used a thin, special lens called a “Fresnel lens” to make things look bigger.
▲ In order to make people feel safe about the lens, researchers tested it in a rabbit’s eye and it turned out that it did not appear to cause any health problems.
According to Parviz, one day, people will be able to see all the information they need directly from their contact lens. We may even be able to zoom(变焦) in on far-away views when enjoying views outdoors.
Parviz is now also trying to develop medical uses for the lens. He is working on putting a blood sugar sensor(感应器) into it to pick up the patient’s blood sugar level and other important medical information.
【小题1】Why did the researchers keep all parts of the lens particularly small?A.Because human eyes can only focus on small things. |
B.Because they hoped these parts can be taken away easily. |
C.Because they didn’t want to influence people’s normal field of vision. |
D.Because small lens can be used to make things look bigger. |
A.清晰的 | B.模糊的 | C.放大的 | D.缩小的 |
A.Has the lens been tested on animals? |
B.Is this kind of lens safe enough for humans? |
C.Can the lens be used by animals? |
D.Are there any other advantages? |
A.Wearing the lens, people may watch TV or read e-mails on the eye. |
B.People can see all the information directly from their contact lens now. |
C.So far, doctors have already used the new lens to pick up patient’s blood sugar. |
D.This kind of special lens can be used as a telescope in the future. |
② A team at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, found a way to put special nanostructuresinto clothing, which can then clean the clothes. When sunlight hits the nanostructures, they break down the dirt and stains (污渍) that don’t belong on your clothes.
③ The nanostructures don’t break down the actual clothing because cotton and the other clothing materials are too strong to be broken down. According to CNN, the researchers cover the clothing in a solution made of silver and copper (铜) nanostructures. All it takes is 40 minutes of sunlight and your clothes will look as good as new.
④ So if you spill on yourself during lunch, you can step outside for a walk, and it will be clean by the time you go inside. It not only makes your life easier, but it can also be good for the environment.
⑤ According to the US Department of Energy, the average load of laundry uses about 25 gallons (about 94 liters) of water. Water is a very important resource, so using less of it to wash clothes is better for the environment. But one of the scientists at RMIT University knows more needs to be done.
⑥ “There’s more work to do before we can start throwing out our washing machines,” said Dr Rajesh Ramanathan, “but this is a strong foundation (基础).”
⑦ So what’s the next step? Ramanathan wants to either start selling the solution by itself or convincing clothing makers to treat the clothing with the solution while clothes are being made.
【小题1】According to the first three paragraphs, _____.
A.the nanostructures can break down dirt and stains on clothes |
B.people can use the self-cleaning clothes on rainy days |
C.the self-cleaning clothes easily wear out |
A.方案 | B.溶液 | C.水盆 |
A.what advantages the self-cleaning clothes have |
