Norman Bethune is one of the most famous heroes in China. He was a 【小题1】 doctor. He came to China to help the Chinese people.

Norman Bethune was born in 1890. He 【小题2】 a doctor in 1916 and went to Spain in 1936 to treat the wounded soldiers during the war there. He soon realized that many people were dying because they did not get to hospital in time. Dr. Bethune developed new ways of taking care of the sick. He invented special 【小题3】 tools to use outside hospitals and close to the fighting areas so that doctors could treat the wounded more 【小题4】. His 【小题5】 saved many lives.

In 1938, Dr. Bethune came to China and helped treat the wounded during the Anti-Japanese War. At that time, there were few doctors 【小题6】 in China. He developed training courses for local doctors and nurses, and wrote books so that they could learn about how he treated the sick. Dr. Bethune often worked very hard without resting or taking care of 【小题7】. 【小题8】, he even worked for sixty-nine hours without stopping and managed to save over a hundred 【小题9】 lives. One day in 1939, he cut his finger during an operation, but he continued his work without treating it. In the end, he died of his wound.

Dr. Bethune’s work for the Chinese people made him a hero in China. There are many books and films about him, and he is still 【小题10】 in both China and Canada today.

Once, there was a man named Zhou Chu. He was stronger than any other man in his village.

People were 【小题1】 of him because he often bullied (欺负) villagers. At the same time, a man-eating tiger and a deep-water monster (怪兽) lived near the village. They often hurt people too. People called 【小题2】, along with Zhou, the “three evils (三害)”.

One day, some villagers asked Zhou to help kill the 【小题3】 and the monster. On the 【小题4】 day, Zhou killed them 【小题5】 and came back. But the villagers thought he lost his life as well. And they couldn’t wait to celebrate his death. Seeing this, Zhou knew 【小题6】 much people hated (讨厌) him and decided to make a(n) 【小题7】.

He visited a famous man named Lu Yun. Lu told him, “【小题8】 one knows what is good in the morning, he can make a change in the evening. Just do what you think is right. ”

From then on, Zhou became a 【小题9】 person and stopped bullying others. Later he died for protecting his country.

In fact, we all make 【小题10】. But it’s never too late to correct them. We just need some courage (勇气) and hard work.

For the past 30 years, Richard Sears, also known as “Uncle Hanzi” by the Chinese, 【小题1】 to one thing: telling the stories behind Chinese characters.

His interest in Chinese characters goes back to 1972, when he was studying physics at university in the US. “I wanted to see the world 【小题2】. But then I realized only 7% of the world’s people speak English as their mother language. So I decided to learn another one,” this American man recalled.

By 1990, Sears spoke Chinese quite well, but he still could hardly wrote it. To Sears, Chinese characters were difficult. “I’m a physicist, so I don’t like 【小题3】 memorization. I knew that Chinese characters came from pictographs (象形文字), so I wanted to know the stories behind them.”

In 2002 he set up his website and named it Chinese Etymology where visitors can check for free the 【小题4】 of Chinese characters. For example, the Chinese character jia, which means home, has a rooftop in the upper part and a big pig in the 【小题5】 part. A long time ago, a building 【小题6】 into two parts. The upper part was for people to live 【小题7】 the other part was the place to raise animals. Such a building 【小题8】 people from floods (洪水) and wild animals. It is the earliest jia.

In September 2021, Sears set up his studio in Nanjing 【小题9】 which focuses on making a set of videos to tell stories of Chinese culture and character origins (起源). “For young Chinese and foreign learners of Chinese characters, these videos not only are 【小题10】 and interesting, but also show the origins of Chinese characters in a clear way,” he says.
